LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- In an announcement made today from conference headquarters, Southwestern University's Mary Cardone was named the 2020 SCAC Women's Tennis Elite 19 award winner. It is the second consecutive year she has taken home the honor.
Cardone, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.881 in Business and Data Science and was a three-time All-SCAC first team selection on the women's tennis team during her career. She was the SCAC Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Year as a freshman in 2017 and finished runner-up for the award in 2018 and 2019.
She becomes the first four-time winner of the Elite 19 award, receiving the Women’s Soccer distinguish this past fall and both the Women's Soccer and Women's Tennis honors a year ago.
Due to the cancelation of the 2020 spring season, the criteria for the SCAC Elite 19 honor was modified. Awarded to the student-athlete who has completed the equivalent of at least 60 credit hours at his or her current institution and has at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA - for this spring only - a First or Second Team All-SCAC honor at any point of the student-athlete's career was enough to satisfy the all-conference requirement. Normally, the student-athlete must have earned All-SCAC First or Second Team honors in his/her sport for that particular season.
The SCAC Elite 19 award was established prior to the 2018-19 academic year and is meant to recognize the best of the best within each conference sponsored-sport as it relates to both academic and athletic achievement.
