LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The spring portion of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis schedule is officially underway as six conference teams were on the court last week.
Trinity, which already has six matches under its belt in the early going, has earned victories against Pacific, 6-3, and No. 24 Cal Tech, 7-2. The 13th-ranked Tigers are 2-4 on the season but 2-1 against Division III competition. Senior Jordan Pitts has paced Trinity early in singles, posting a 3-3 record in the top two flights, including a 3-2 record at the number two line. Pitts collected singles victories against Div. II Hawaii Pacific and Cal Tech with his lone loss against a Div. III opponent coming against No. 2 ranked Claremont-M-S. Freshman Hao Nguyen and sophomore Christian Settles posted perfect 3-0 marks in doubles to open the spring season. The duo collected two wins at the two line and one win at the three line, knocking off three ranked opponents in Hawaii Pacific, Cal Tech and Claremont-M-S.
Southwestern and Schreiner both opened their spring campaigns with a perfect 1-0 mark. The Pirates defeated SCAC foe St. Thomas, 8-1, while the Mountaineers knocked off non-conference opponent Howard Payne, 8-1. Southwestern swept the doubles play as Alex Dimanche, Alexander Joseph and Hunter Bajoit were all double winners for the Pirates collecting wins in both doubles and singles play. Schreiner swept the doubles play as well against the Yellow Jackets and saw Luis Cabreja, Matthew Jimenez, Carson Kirk and William Ueckert all collect wins in both doubles and singles play.
St. Thomas, which is in its inaugural season of men’s tennis, split matches last week, falling to Southwestern but winning its opener against ETBU, 6-3. The Celts took two of the opening doubles matches and were led by Juanrodrigo Lopez and Quashi Philips who were double winners on the afternoon.
Texas Lutheran also opened its spring schedule by posting a 2-2 record with wins over Louisiana College (6-3) and conference opponent Centenary (7-2). Freshman Quintin Johsnon won both of his singles matches against the Wildcats and the Gents to lead the Bulldogs.
SCAC men’s tennis returns to the court this week with matches scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
