LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.- The second week of the 2019 season saw nine of the league's 10 teams in action with No. 10 Colorado College posting the only undefeated mark of the weekend.
No. 10 CC (7-1) swept through its own Spike It Up Classic, defeating LeTourneau (3-0) and La Verne (3-0) on Friday and Willamette (3-0) and MIT (3-1) on Saturday. The Tigers rallied from a 17-9 deficit in the first set and an 18-12 hole in the second in defeating MIT in the tourney finale. Sophomore outside hitter Isabella Vasquez earned tournament MVP honors after compiling 42 kills (3.23 per set) and a .325 hitting percentage over the four matches.
Both Austin College (3-5) and University of Dallas (3-5) rebounded from winless opening weekends to post 3-1 marks in their respective tournament action. Playing on their home court for the second consecutive weekend, the 'Roos picked up victories against Paul Quinn (3-0) and Sul Ross State (3-0) on Friday, and then split a pair of matches the following day – falling to Sul Ross State (3-2) before ending the weekend with a victory over Howard Payne (3-0).
At the Millsaps/Belhaven Invitational, Dallas swept both East Texas Baptist (3-2) and Belhaven (3-1) on Friday, and then split matches on Saturday – losing to Huntingdon (3-1) before posting a come-from-hind victory against Central Baptist (3-2) to close out the weekend.
No. 7 Trinity (6-2) and Southwestern (4-4) were both at the UT-Dallas Invitational and both posted 2-2 performances. Southwestern opened play with an upset of No. 23 Pacific Lutheran (3-2) and followed that with a victory over Pomona-Pitzer (3-1) later that evening. The Pirates struggled to keep the momentum going on Saturday, falling to Aurora and the host school UT-Dallas – both in four sets. After falling to the host school UT-Dallas (3-1) and No. 23 Pacific Lutheran (3-2) on Friday, the Tigers rebounded the following day with a pair of victories over Pomona-Pitzer (3-1) and Aurora (3-0) with the latter being a rematch from last year’s first-round NCAA tournament.
Johnson & Wales (2-6) also went 2-2 over the weekend – posting a pair of victories over Rockford (3-0) and Mills (3-0) on Friday before falling to Marian (3-2) and Illinois Tech (3-2) the following day.
Texas Lutheran (4-4) and Centenary (2-7) both competed over the weekend at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitaitonal and both posted 1-3 marks. TLU fell to Puget Sound (3-2), Cal Lutheran (3-1), and Chapman (3-0) before ending the week on a positive note with a 3-0 win over Whittier. Centenary, who opened the week with a 3-0 loss at East Texas Baptist on Tuesday, posted a similar line as conference partner Texas Lutheran, losing matches to Chapman (3-0), Whittier (3-1), and Linfield (3-1) before rebounding with a come-from-behind victory over Occidental (3-2) on Saturday.
In its only match of the week, Schreiner fell to Sul Ross State, 3-1, in its home opener on Wednesday.
St. Thomas (1-3) was idle but the Celts return to play this week Tuesday as they travel to take on Centenary in the SCAC opener for both squads.
