ABILENE, Texas – The SCAC Champion Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in a 4-1 first round loss to Hardin-Simmons University.
Hardin-Simmons struck early in the match, scoring off a set piece from a corner kick with passes from Baylee Ford and Madelyn Dowell setting up Taylor Bernal for the opening goal at the 14:50 mark.
Casady Jenkins added another goal before the half, scoring at the 28:34 mark off a pass from Hayden Abor.
Hardin-Simmons doubled Southwestern in shots in the first half at 8-4, with a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. The Pirates put three of their shots on goal with Hardin-Simmons' goalie Haley Foley stopping all of them.
Taylor Bernal added a third goal five minutes into the second half, scoring on a pass from Michaela Sabrsula for a 3-0 lead.
Hallie Rutherford put the Pirates on the board almost 59 minutes in, scoring off an assist from Sydney Kattaward, gaining an advantage from a corner kick.
Hardin-Simmons' Randie Dennison put her team back up three with a goal off a pass from Morgan McAdams.
With the loss, the Pirates end their season with a 16-5-1 record, winning the program's first SCAC Championship and making its first NCAA Tournament appearance.
