LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - All 10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball teams tipped off the 2019 season this past weekend.
No. 17 Trinity was the only conference team to go undefeated over the opening weekend as the Tigers posted four victories - including wins over No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-1) and No. 25 St. Benedict (3-1). Trinity also defeated Neumann (3-0) and Minnesota-Morris (3-0) to win its own National Invitational. Avery Tuggle had 47 kills and hit .296 to earn Tournament Most Valuable Player honors for her effort over the weekend.
Both No. 7 Colorado College and Texas Lutheran went 3-1 at their respecive home season-opening tournaments. The Tigers saw their 66-match home wininng streak on Friday as, after a 3-0 sweep of Millsaps, CC dropped a 3-2 decision to Clarkson. The last Division III opponent to escape Reid Arena with a victory was No. 22 Nebraska Wesleyan University on Oct. 4, 2014. CC rebounded on Saturday to defeat both Edgewood (3-0) and UW-Oshkosh (3-1).
After defeating Howard Payne and Louisiana College in a pair of three-set matches on Friday, Texas Lutheran downed Sul Ross State in three sets in the morning match before falling in an afternoon contest with McMurry (3-1) in the Bulldog Challenge.
Schreiner and Southwestern both split their matches on opening weekend. After dropping matches against McMurry (3-1) and Sul Ross State (3-1) on Friday, Schreiner rebounded with three-set sweeps of both Howard Payne and Louisiana College on the final day of the TLU Bulldog Challenge. The 2-2 start is the best for the Mountaineers since joining the SCAC prior to the 2013 season.
Southwestern defeated both Hardin-Simmons and Whittier in straight sets on Friday before falling to Carthage (3-0) and Whitworth (3-0) on Saturday at its own SU Pirate Fall Invitational.
Partincipating at the Austin College Classic, Centenary and St. Thomas both went 1-3 in opening weekend action. The Ladies blanked Paul Quinn, 3-0, while St. Thomas earned its first program victory as a member of NCAA Division III with a 3-2 win over LeTourneau on Saturday.
Austin College, Dallas and Johnson & Wales are all seeking their first win of the season after 0-4 starts to the 2019 campaign.
