CAMERON GIMS OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a senior guard on the men's basketball team from Cypress, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning October 25.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

When Gims, the two-time SCAC Defensive Player of the Year isn’t stifling opposing offenses, he is serving his local community in many different aspects. On the University of St. Thomas campus, he works for the Career Services Center and also serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Furthermore, Gims has also volunteered with off-campus programs that focus on mental development of individuals of all ages.

The two most notables volunteering experiences for Gims was with Reach Unlimited and Lamkin Elementary School. With Reach Unlimited, he was given the opportunity to engage with adults with disabilities by playing board games, reading books and furthering social skills through conversation. Cameron would leave his mark on the youth through volunteering for Lamkin Elementary. Here, he would mentor 15 students from the ages of 5-7 by reading books and teaching life skills and values.

“I first started volunteering through these programs in high school and fell in love with it” said Gims. “I try to go as much as possible and continue to inspire others.”

Gims believes his service off the court has helped him with his leadership on the court. After being a leader for the Celts since the moment he stepped on campus, it is undeniable that his character makes a difference on the team and throughout the community.

“I’ve realized that everyone, including my teammates, could be going through something. I try to pick up as many people as possible on the court” Gims added. “Character is extremely important to me. I not only represent this University but also my team and my family; I want to make everyone proud.”
