SCAC Announces 2021 Volleyball Tournament Bracket

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The SCAC office tonight announced the bracket for the 2021 Volleyball Tournament, which will be begin Friday, November 5 and will be hosted by Trinity University. Official Tournament Website | Bracket

The postseaosn conference event returns to its traditional predetermined site with the top six teams qualifying after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to postpone the championship until the spring and play the event over three weekends.

Trinity (29-2; 16-0 SCAC), the second-ranked team in the nation, finished off the regular season with victories on Saturday over Schreiner University and 16th-ranked Southwestern University to complete its first undefeated regular season in conference play since 2007 and earn the top seed to next weekend's SCAC championship tournament. The Tigers also extended their second-longest NCAA III active home winning streak to 35 matches and its consecutive victories in the state of Texas to 50 in a row.

Colorado College (28-4; 13-3) clinched the second seed after posting victories over University of Dallas and Austin College on Friday and Centenary College and Texas Lutheran University on Saturday. The seventh-ranked Tigers are the defending conference champions, ending the 2020-21 spring season as the top ranked team in the nation with a perfect 17-0 mark, defeating Trinity in the conference championship match on its home floor.

As the top two seeds, both Trinity and Colorado College earn byes into Saturday's semifinal round.

Southwestern (22-4; 12-4) enters as the third seed to this year's event - the fourth-consecutive year the Pirates have earned that seed. The league's third nationally ranked team at No. 16, the Pirates are seeking their first conference title since 2015.

Texas Lutheran (18-12; 9-7) is the fourth seed at this year's championship - the team's highest seed since qualifying in the same position in 2017. The Bulldogs dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Colorado College on Sunday in its regular season finale.

Rounding out the six-team field, Austin College (20-10; 7-9) earned the fifth seed and University of St. Thomas (10-17; 5-11) will be the sixth seed. The Celts finished tied in the sixth slot with Dallas but earned the tiebreaker for the final tournament berth by virtue of its head to head sweep of the Crusaders during the regular season.  

Quarterfinal round play begins on Friday with Texas Lutheran and Austin College scheduled for 3:30 pm CT with Southwestern and St. Thomas following at 6 pm CT. Saturday's semifinals get underway at Noon CT as Trinity takes on the winner of TLU and Austin with Colorado College tangling with the Southwestern/UST winner at 2:30 pm CT.

Sunday's schedule gets underway with the third-place match at 10:00 am CT and the championshp match following at 12:30 pm CT.

The winner of the SCAC Volleyball Tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship, which begins the following weekend.
