Trinity (25-2) and Hardin-Simmons (21-4) are part of a four-team pod (first and second rounds) to be played in Abilene, Texas. In the other first-round matchup, Whitman College (26-1) will meet Whittier College (16-8). Friday’s winners will play on Saturday, Mar. 5 with a berth to the round of 16 on the line.
The matchup between the Tigers and the Cowgirls is the second this season. Hardin-Simmons handed Trinity its last loss, defeating the Tigers, 65-63, all the way back on November 12th. Hardin-Simmons claimed its seventh American Southwest Conference women's basketball tournament championship with a 64-54 victory over UT Dallas on Saturday.
Trinity won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships for the second-straight season with a 50-45 win over Colorado College on Sunday. The Tigers led by head coach Cameron Hill are riding a program-record 24-game winning streak and will be making their 12th NCAA appearance in school history. Trinity is 1-0 all-time versus Hardin-Simmons in the NCAA Tournament, knocking off the Cowgirls in the third round en route to the 2003 National Championship.
Sixteen sites will host four teams for first and second-round competition Friday-Saturday, March 4-5. Second-round winners will advance to one of eight third-round sectional sites Friday-Saturday, March 11-12. The semifinals/final will be conducted at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hosted by SportsPITTSBURGH and Presidents' Athletic Conference March 17-19.
