MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior outfielder Will Cates of Southwestern University has been named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.
Cates helped the Pirates to a series victory over Schreiner last weekend at Rockwell Field. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder hit .571 (8-for-14) with three doubles, one triple, a homer and four RBIs. His 16 total bases translated to a 1.143 slugging percentage, while he reached base at a .647 clip. Additionally, Cates stole five bases in as many attempts, scored four runs and was intentionally walked twice.
In the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader against the Mountaineers, Cates was a home run short of the cycle and stole four bases. He then hit a homer to lead off the nightcap, which propelled Southwestern to a win in the series finale.
Cates is hitting .418 (38-for-91) with eight doubles, five triples, one home run and 13 RBIs. The Pirates' leadoff batter is slugging .648 and has stolen 18 bases in 21 attempts.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its fifth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors and/or conference offices. This is the sixth Team of the Week of the 2016 season.
