SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University men's tennis team swept the “A” Singles and Doubles crowns at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships at the Butch Newman Tennis Center on Sunday.
Paxton Deuel beat fellow senior teammate and defending champion Adam Krull 6-4, 6-4 in the “A” Singles final. It marked the second title in Deuel's career, who also won in 2013. Krull was the tournament’s top seed, while Deuel was seeded second. In the doubles championship matchup, the third-seeded duo of Krull and sophomore Matt Tyer took top honors with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ryan Ellwood and Jack Puckey of the University of Texas-Tyler.
Up next for Deuel, Krull and Tyer will be a trip to Sumter, South Carolina, and the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 15-18. Deuel will compete in singles, and Krull and Tyer in the doubles event. Joining their Tiger male counterparts will be junior Liza Southwick and sophomore Marie Lutz who won the women’s Regional doubles title September 20 for the second consecutive year. The Regional tournament was held at Georgetown, Texas.
In Sunday’s singles semifinals, Krull bested No. 3 Daniel Budd of UT-Tyler 7-5, 6-3. Deuel outfought fourth-seeded Arthur Fagundes of UT-Tyler 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Krull and Tyer edged No. 2 seeds Fagundes and Frankie Fischer 9-8 (1) in the doubles semifinals. Tiger newcomers Wilson Lambeth and Cameron Bilsbarrow lost 8-6 to Ellwood and Puckey in the semis.
Junior Manny Brown won the “A” Singles Consolation championship with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tiger sophomore Austin Crist. No. 2 seeds Kevin Lee and Clark Rivers, both sophomores, advanced to the “B” Doubles final, and came up just short 9-7 to No. 4 Kenneth Hardy and Eric Meendsen of Austin College.
