SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The second-ranked Trinity women's soccer team's season came to an end as the Tigers were edged 1-0 by #8 Washington University-St. Louis (MO) in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Tigers suffered their first loss of the season, and finished the campaign with a 23-1-0 record. Washington-St. Louis, last year's national runner-up, now stands at 17-2-3.
The game featured two of the top teams in Division III, with a spot in the NCAA Semifinals in Salem, Virginia, on the line.
The only score of the game came in the 68th minute, as Washington's Megan Nicklay headed in a corner from Lexie Sprague for the eventual game-winner.
Trinity held a slight 13-11 lead in overall shots taken, and a slim 4-3 lead in shots on goal. The Bears produced a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
The teams were locked in a scoreless tie at the half, thanks in large part to two saves by Washington - including a stellar stop on a shot by Julia Kelly in the final minutes of the first period. Kelly's free kick went around the wall to the bottom-right of the goal, but Lizzy Crist stepped in front at the last second to keep the game tied.
The game marked the first shutout loss for the Tigers since the 2015 NCAA Second Round, when Trinity fell 2-0 to Hardin-Simmons (TX) University.
The Tigers made their eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and the 22nd overall. Trinity last made the Quarterfinals in 2013, when the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Championship game in San Antonio.
