MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The Trinity University Tigers, thanks to their second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in three years and the program’s sixth, placed a tournament-high four players on the 2010 SCAC Baseball All-Tournament team.
Entering the tournament as the number one
seed from the West, the Tigers rattled off four wins over four days
to win the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
Baseball Championship. First-year pitcher Ryan Lucero earned the
win in the championship game by tossing eight innings while
scattering nine hits, striking out seven, not walking a batter and
allowing just one earned run in the win.
Evan Jones of Trinity, who hit .600 with three doubles, a homer,
six RBI and seven runs scored during the tourney, was one of four
Trinity players to earn all-tournament honors. Junior infielder
Dominick Robusto, sophomore outfielder Nick Papas and sophomore
pitcher Ben Klimesh joined Jones on the team, which was selected by
the participating coaches of the event.
Klimesh did not allow a run in two appearances (one start), while tossing a complete game shutout with 11 strike outs in Trinity’s first win over DePauw. He also picked up the save in the championship game.
SCAC runner-up DePauw had three players named to the All-Tournament team followed by Millsaps (two), Rhodes (two) and Austin College (one).
Jones, Klimesh and Rhodes’ Chris Conkell were unanimous selection to the team. Two designated hitters (Jason Cohen of DePauw & Matthew Burnick of Rhodes) tied for the final spot at that position.
