SUWANEE, Ga. - Two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games were played during the week with Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee both tallying wins over Southwestern. The Panthers won 20-3 while the Tigers prevailed by a 19-6 margin.

Birmingham-Southern got a pair of conference
wins this week, defeating Hendrix on Sunday 15-4 and Southwestern
on Friday 20-3. Against the Warriors the Panthers (6-8, 3-1
SCAC) racked up seven goals before the Warriors could
answer. BSC posted two in the first, six in the second, one in
the third, and six more in the fourth to maintain control of the
game from beginning to end. It was the first win for the
Panthers inside Panther Stadium this season, they would not wait
long for the second. ‘Southern scored ten goals in each
half to overwhelm the Pirates. D.J. Ward led the Panthers
with nine goals in the two games with one assist for 10
points. Chris Clarke anchored the defense with 19 grounders,
three forced-turnovers, and even two shots. BSC will
conclude the season on Sunday as they travel up to St. Louis to
take on Fontbonne University at 1:00 p.m.
Colorado College improved to 8-2
overall, 6-1 on the road, and completed it’s four-game tour
of Ohio with a 3-1 record. The Tigers scored five unanswered goals
during the second quarter and killed four of six penalties in the
second half to earn a 9-5 victory over Wittenberg University on
Sunday. Carson Christman paced the CC offense with two goals and
two assists. Colorado College saw its five-game winning streak come
to an end with a 17-9 loss at No. 11 Denison University on Friday
night. The Big Red scored six consecutive goals midway through the
second half to build a 15-7 lead and the Tigers never recovered.
Brendan Haas made 14 saves for the Tigers, who were out shot by a
46-30 margin. CC is idle until the first weekend of May when the
Tigers face Sewanee and Hendrix in Conway, Ark.
Hendrix suffered a pair of losses this weekend
and remains winless in 2010 with an 0-10 record. The Warriors
took on Fontbonne for a 11-5 loss on Friday night and then dropped
a 12-5 contest to Christopher Newport (Newport News, Va.) on
Saturday night. Hendrix and Fontbonne scored four goals apiece
in the first half, however, the Griffins owned the second half and
shut down the Warriors attack for the win. Fontbonne scored
five unanswered goals to start the second half and out shot Hendrix
28-8 in the final 30 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder Don
Geders scored the Warriors’ last goal. Hendrix was held
to just one goal in the second half for the second straight game as
Christopher Newport walked away with the victory. Hendrix
junior attacker Clayton Cersonsky and junior midfielder Tim Wojcik
led the team with two goals apiece. Junior attacker Dan Fox
and sophomore attacker Ben Nelson dished out two assists
each. Nelson also scored a goal in the contest.
Sewanee moved to 1-1 in the SCAC Sunday with a big
19-6 win over Southwestern. The Tigers got out to a 4-0 lead in the
first quarter and never looked back, earning the 13-goal win.
Pierce Leonard and Thomas Moore led Sewanee with three goals each.
Drew Lincoln, Hank Gerrity and Jameel Stokes scored two goals
each. Teddy Peterson picked up a team-high eight ground balls.
Senior Terrell McWhirter had five ground balls. Patrick Quinn
led Sewanee in goal and had three saves and the win. Sewanee out
shot Southwestern 50-17 and led 41-16 in ground balls. The Tigers
also won 19 of 26 face-offs. Sewanee is now 3-9 and 1-1 in the
SCAC. The Tigers will wrap up the season in two weeks with games
against Hendrix and Colorado College at Hendrix. Southwestern is
1-11 and 1-3 in the SCAC.
Southwestern closed out its season on the road this week,
facing SCAC opponents Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee over the
weekend. Both contests were against tough competition as SU fell
20-3 on Friday at BSC and 19-6 at Sewanee. The losses mark the end
of the Pirates first season with a 1-11 overall record and 1-3 in
the SCAC and they have a great base with which to build from in
2011.
