Centre's Owens and Jones honored by Kentucky USATF and K.T.C.C.C.A.

DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre track & field head coach Lisa Owens was named the 2009 College Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year and junior Chrys Jones (Harrodsburg, Ky.) was named the 2009 College Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Year by the Kentucky USATF and the K.T.C.C.C.A.

Owens coached the 2009 Centre women's track and field team to an outstanding season. The women's team ended up winning the University of the Cumberlands meet where 14 other teams competed. The Colonels had their best ever finish at the Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference Championships where the team finished fourth overall. Centre sophomore Emily Niehaus (Maineville, Ohio) competed at the 2009 Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as well as the 2009 U.S. Junior Track and Field National Championships during her freshman year.

Owens had three conference champions, eight All-Conference selections, an All-American, and an Academic All-American during the 2009 season.

Jones opened up the 2009 outdoor track and field season with a win at the Rhodes Open with a jump of 49 feet, 1 1/2 inches. In the second meet, which was the Hanover Invitational, he won with a jump of 50 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Centre hosted the third meet of the season where Jones finished in first for the third straight time jumping 50 feet, 4 inches.

After taking first place at the SCAC Championships in the triple jump, Jones competed in the event at the 2009 Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio where he won the national title and set a new Don Drumm Stadium record with a jump of 50 feet, 3 1/4 inches. Jones was named an All-American for his performance in the triple jump.

Jones also competed twice in the long jump during the 2009 track and field season, where he won the event at the Cumberland Invitational with a jump of 22 feet and 1/4 inch and at the SCAC Championships he took home third place after jumping 22 feet, 5 inches.

The Colonels will open the 2010 indoor track and field season on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Tiger Invitational in Greencastle, Ind.
