SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University Tigers
first-year football kicker Garrett Biel has been ranked No. 1 in the nation in
field goals.
The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Biel, from Clayton, Calif. (De La Salle), led the NCAA Division III, connecting on 17 of 19 field-goal attempts (.895). Biel averaged 1.70 field goals over the 10-game season. His 17 field goals established a Trinity record for a single season. Biel also broke the record for most field goals in one game, booting four against Rhodes College. His longest field goal of the season was 48 yards. Biel also kicked 31 of 33 extra points.
Biel was recognized for his accomplishments by being named to the d3football.com All-America Third Team, and to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team.
The Tigers were ranked No. 1 nationally in net punting, with a 36.88 yards-per-game average.
First-year punter Kyle Trella of Chandler, Ariz. (Chandler), was ranked No. 2 in the nation, averaging 44.0 yards per punt. The 6-foot, 165-pound Trella led the nation in punting average during the regular season. Trella shattered a 46-year-old Trinity record with his 48.8 yards per punt average against Sewanee: The University of the South, and now holds four of the top 10 averages in Tigers' single-game history (minimum of five punts). He landed over 33 percent (16) of his punts inside the 20-yard line.
Trella was elected to the d3football.com All-America Third Team, and to the All-SCAC First Team. In addition, Trella was named SCAC Football Newcomer of the Year.
Trinity, led by 20th-year head coach Steve Mohr, completed the season with a 7-3 record. The Tigers went 4-2 in the SCAC, and tied for third place.
