SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University men’s soccer team will play the national team of Haiti in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Soccer Field. The game is organized by San Antonio Sports and Trinity University, and will be the first for the Haitian team since the devastating earthquake in their country on January 12, 2010.
The game is open to the public, and admission is free. The Trinity Soccer Field is located on the south end of campus, adjacent to Mulberry Street. Trinity University’s address is One Trinity Place.
Haiti’s national squad is training in the U.S. for a little over two weeks, in preparation for a game against Argentina on May 5, 2010.
All the players survived the Jan. 12 quake in Haiti, but 30 Fédération Haitienne de Football staff members died in the collapse of the team’s headquarters.
The Tigers are led by 19th-year head coach Paul McGinlay, who is one of the most successful coaches in the nation. Coach McGinlay has a record of 318-57-22 (.829), and ranks No. 2 in winning percentage among active NCAA Division III coaches.
In 2003, the Tigers went 24-0-0 and captured the NCAA Division III national championship, becoming the first team in the state of Texas – in any NCAA division – to win a soccer championship.
Trinity has also been national runner-up, making 13 total appearances in the NCAA postseason tournament. The Tigers have captured 13 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
