SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University Tigers
women's soccer team, led by sixth-year head coach Lance Key,
finished the 2009 season ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III in
the goals-against average category.
Trinity's taut defense allowed only five goals in 19 games (.257 per game). The Tigers were ranked fifth in shutout percentage (.737), chalking up 14 scoreless games during the campaign.
First-year goalkeeper Katie Garrett of Joshua, Texas (Joshua), held a No. 2 individual ranking in goals-against average (.257), and was No. 21 in save percentage (.884). Garrett registered 38 saves during the season.
Trinity's potent offense scored 56 goals, and was ranked No. 31 in scoring offense (2.95 goals per game).
The Tigers sported a perfect 16-0-0 regular-season record. Under coach Key's leadership, Trinity won a fourth SCAC Championship. Coach Key was elected SCAC Coach of the Year for the third time. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals (hosted by Trinity), where they were edged 4-2 in penalty kicks by Lynchburg. Trinity completed the season with an 18-0-1 record, and a No. 5 national team ranking. The Tigers were ranked No. 3 in won-lost-percentage (.947).
