GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Centre College junior Chrys Jones won
the triple jump competition on Saturday at the 2010 NCAA Division
III Indoor Track & Field National Championships at DePauw
University.
It was the second individual national title on the weekend for a
SCAC student-athlete. Trinity University's Todd Wildman won his second
consecutive indoor pentathlon title the day before.
Jones won the triple jump to earn his second career individual
national championship and 21st individual title for a SCAC
student-athlete. Jones also won the event at the 2009 NCAA
Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
“It feels great, especially coming off a pretty rough indoor
season to finish out the way I did,” he said.
He competed in the event on Saturday, March 13 along with 11 other
participants. The top nine from the first round qualified for the
final round.
In the first round, Jones jumped 48-3 1/2,
which was the third best jump going into the final round. Jones
made a huge improvement in the final round as he recorded a 49-3
1/2 jump, which was barely good enough to beat senior Stephen
Morton from Massachusetts Institute of Technology who jumped
49-3.
“In the prelims, I fouled a pretty decent 49-foot jump and
tried to adjust my run-through between the finals and prelims. But
I was off,” he said. “I just prayed I wouldn’t
scratch and have a good jump.”
Jones was also named an all-American for his accomplishment and led Centre to a 18th-place men's team finish with 10 points.
Centre's Emily Niehaus competed in the weight throw event on Friday. There were 16 athletes who were competing in the event and the top eight from the first round advanced to the finals. Niehaus competed in the first flight of eight throwers and she threw the weight 50-0 3/4. Her throw was not quite enough to advance her to the finals, but she was only one of three sophomore's competing in the event.
In the finals, junior Holly Ozanick from Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the indoor national champion as she threw the weight 64-5 1/4.
Centre will open their outdoor season on Saturday, March 20 as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to take part in the Rhodes College Open.
