SUWANEE, Ga. - Birmingham-Southern College continued its hot streak at the East/Central crossover Oct. 3-4 at Rhodes College. The Panthers tallied four wins to extend the teams' winning streak to six matches. Birmingham-Southern improved to 9-7 overall on the season.
Also performing well was the Centre College Colonels. Centre went 3-1 during the weekend tournament. The three wins marked the first time in over five years that the program went better than 2-2 at a conference crossover.
AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College had
the week off. The ‘Roos are back in action October 10-11in
Conway, Ark. at the SCAC West/Central Cross #2. Austin College is
16-3 overall and 5-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
play.
Birmingham-Southern went 4-0 this weekend at the
SCAC East/Central Divisional, hosted by Rhodes College. On
Saturday, the Panthers defeated DePauw, 3-2, and Sewanee, 3-0. On
Sunday, BSC swept Oglethorpe and Hendrix, 3-0, for its sixth
straight win to move to 9-7 on the season. Senior Sarah Harris led
BSC in kills in all four matches, averaging 3.71 kills per set. The
Panthers travel to Conway, Ark., this weekend for the SCAC
West/Central Divisional #2, taking on No. 15 Southwestern
University, No. 12 Colorado College, No. 16 Trinity University, and
Rhodes.
Centre traveled to Rhodes College to participate
in the SCAC East/Central Cross Divisional. The Colonels went 3-1,
beating Sewanee and Hendrix 3-0 and Rhodes 3-2 before dropping
their match to Millsaps 0-3. This marks the first time in over five
years that Centre has gone better than 2-2 at a conference
tournament and the first time in five years that the Colonels have
beat Rhodes College. Next up for the Gold and White will be a home
match against Defiance College on Friday night at 7:30pm.
No. 12 Colorado College stretched its winning
streak to six matches with a 3-0 victory over Division II Colorado
Christian University on Friday night. The three-set victory was
CC’s 12th in 19 matches. Sophomore setter Amy Schornack had
23 assists and posted season highs with seven kills and a .545
hitting percentage. She also added tied her career high with four
of the Tigers’ 10 service aces. Junior middle blocker Emily
Perkins led the Tigers with 11 kills and had a hand in six of
CC’s nine blocked shots. The junior middle blocker finished
with a .450 hitting percentage with just two errors on 20 total
attacks. Junior middle blocker Erika Pirotte had a team-high 11
digs. Colorado College evened its record against Division II
opponents at 1-1. The Tigers have three more matches against Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference opponents this season, beginning
Tuesday night when CC plays host to No. 18 Metropolitan State
College.
DePauw improved to 17-5 overall and 5-2 in the
conference after winning three of four matches at the SCAC
Central/East Divisional. The Tigers opened with a 3-2 loss to
Birmingham-Southern before topping Rhodes by a 3-2 count. They then
won both Sunday matches by 3-0 scores over Hendrix and Oglethorpe.
For the weekend, Katey Larson led the Tigers with 2.62 kills per
set, while Kristen Chynoweth hit .267 and averaged 0.7 blocks per
set. Ali Smith averaged 8.9 assists, while Kylee Lehrman totaled 11
service aces and Madison Hoenig averaged 4.3 digs per set.
Hendrix went 2-3 on the week with a
non-conference win over Bacone College on Tuesday and a 1-3 record
in the SCAC Central vs. East crossover this weekend. The Warriors
took down Oglethorpe, 3-1, in their first game of the weekend
before losing three-straight games via straight sets to end the
crossover tournament. Hendrix lost to Centre, DePauw and
Birmingham-Southern to wrap up the tournament. The Warriors now
stand at 7-14 overall and 2-5 in SCAC action. Hendrix was led by
junior outside hitter Becca Clancy with 22 kills, while junior
middle blocker Leah Groat and first year outside hitter Katie Bates
added 20 kills on the weekend. First year setter Danielle Young
tallied 55 assists and sophomore setter Ashley Skinner collected 42
assists. Junior libero Kim Larson paced the squad with 73 digs in
the four matches over the weekend.
Millsaps (10-9, 3-4
SCAC) ended a successful week where they went 4-1 in a
non-conference match at Loyola Univ. (La.) and four matches at the
SCAC Central-East Divisional. In New Orleans, the Majors pulled off
a come-from-behind victory in five sets to earn the season sweep
over the Wolfpack. Traveling to Memphis, Tenn. for four important
conference matches, Millsaps opened with host Rhodes and lost 3-2
in five sets after claiming the first two sets. The rest of the
weekend belonged to the Majors as they swept through the next three
matches with 3-0 wins over Oglethorpe, Sewanee, and Centre.
Millsaps will hit the road again for a non-conference match at Rust
College before heading to Hendrix College for another weekend of
SCAC play.
Oglethorpe dropped all four conference matches
this past weekend in Memphis, Tenn. The Stormy Petrels fell to
Hendrix, 3-1 and then were swept 3-0 by Millsaps,
Birmingham-Southern and DePauw. Oglethorpe is now 8-12 on the
season and will step out of the conference this coming weekend for
matches with Berry College and Agnes Scott.
Rhodes finished the weekend 2-2 at this
weekend’s Central-East Divisional. In the team’s first
match, the Lynx pulled off a victory against Millsaps after being
down 0-2 to win the battle in five sets. Setter Laura Jensen earned
another triple double on the weekend with 10 kills, 11 digs and 46
assists. The Lynx then dropped two more five set battles to DePauw
and Centre. Senior outside hitter Kelsea Everett led the team with
both matches with 38 kills. The Lynx came back to beat Sewanee in
their final match of the tournament. Sophomore outside hitter
Claire Warren led the team with 17 kills while hitting .519 on the
afternoon.
Sewanee played at the SCAC Central-East
Divisional in Memphis and took losses to Centre,
Birmingham-Southern, Millsaps and Rhodes. On Sunday, Sammie Maddox
led the tigers with 10 kills, while Erin Brahm had 20 assists.
Adrienne Borchardt had four aces on the day. The Tigers are now
2-15 on the season and 0-7 in SCAC play. Sewanee will travel to
Holly Springs, Miss. on Friday for a non-conference matchup with
Rust College.
No. 14 Southwestern had the week off from
competition. They will have a non-conference game on Tuesday night
at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor before returning to
conference action in Conway, Ark. over the weekend at the SCAC
West/Central Cross #2.
No. 15 Trinity won its only match of the week,
defeating Our Lady of the Lake University 3-0 at home on Thursday
evening. Trinity lost a 3-2 match earlier this season to OLLU. The
Tigers were led by Madison McMahon’s 18 kills and .640
hitting percentage. Amy Mittelstaedt added 14 kills in the match,
while Caiti Troyer had 42 assists and 11 digs (both team highs).
Trinity will host UT-Brownsville on Wednesday evening, then will
travel to Hendrix College for the second SCAC West-Central
Tournament of the year. The Tigers will face hosting Hendrix,
Millsaps, Birmingham-Southern, and Austin College.
