SUWANEE, Ga. - Centre took over the top spot in the SCAC this week after picking up a win over Rhodes and tying Hendrix on the road this weekend. The Colonels who opened up the season with two losses have only lost one game in their last thirteen.
- AROUND THE SCAC -
Austin College lost
its only contest of the week 4-0 against SCAC foe Colorado College
in chilly conditions Saturday afternoon. The ‘Roos will be
back in action Friday as they host Oglethorpe.
Birmingham-Southern (9-2-1) won one and tied one
this weekend, tying no. 12 Trinity, 1-1, on Friday and defeating
Southwestern 2-1 on Sunday. Neither team scored in the first half
on Friday, but Trinity finally found the back of the net in the
48th minute of play on an unassisted goal by Josh Adams. BSC
remained scoreless until the 81st minute when freshman Nicholas
Reitmeier sent a long ball up from midfield to freshman Kyle
Sherrin, who scored his second goal of the season to tie things up.
The teams played through the remainder of regulation as well as two
10-minute overtime periods without scoring again. On Sunday,
Sophomore Sean Head had a hand in both Panther goals to help take
down the Pirates. He assisted Andrew Shelton in the 64th-minute and
scored the game-winner in the 81st-minute to put the Panthers over
the top. The Panthers will return to the pitch this Thursday,
October 15, for a non-conference match with Maryville College.
Centre continued on its undefeated streak over the
weekend, defeating Rhodes College away before tying Hendrix College
away. On Friday night, Rhodes hosted Centre at the Mike Rose Soccer
Complex in Memphis, TN. On a wet pitch, Centre jumped out to a 3-0
lead before conceding a late goal to win 3-1. Traveling to Conway,
Arkansas for their Sunday match, Centre went down 1-0 to Hendrix
before leveling early in the 2nd half, only to see the match end in
a 1-1 draw. The Colonels, 10-3-2 (4-1-1 in conference), head south
for two conference contests in Texas, taking on #12 Trinity
University on Friday night before heading to Southwestern
University for a Sunday match.
Jordan Reese made sure nothing spoiled homecoming and a pre-game
ceremony honoring head coach Horst Richardson’s 500th career
victory. Reese posted a career-high eight points with two goals and
two assists to lead Colorado College to a 4-0
victory over Austin College on the frozen tundra of CC’s
Stewart Field on Saturday afternoon. Reese tallied what proved to
be the sixth game-winning goal of his career 12:58 into the first
half when he sent a direct kick into the top left corner from 20
yards out. He completed the first multi-goal game of his career
just over 15 minutes later when he converted off a pass from senior
midfielder Ben Hancock. Senior forward Brendan Douglas extended
CC’s lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute, one-timing a crossing
pass from Reese from 20 yards out on the left side that went inside
the far post. Matt Fechter completed the scoring with just under 20
minutes remaining when he found the net with a header off of a
Reese corner kick. It was the fourth multi-assist game of
Reese’s career. Reese took over the team scoring lead with 15
points. Senior goalkeeper Brian Engle had to make only two saves
while posting his third shutout of the season and the ninth of his
career. Colorado College will play host to Sewanee and Oglethorpe
University next Friday and Sunday, respectively.
DePauw split their weekend games with a 2-0 loss
to Hendrix on Friday and a 3-2 win at Rhodes on Sunday. The Tigers
outshot the Warriors, 10-9, but Hendrix scored with just 19 seconds
left in the half and then on a second-half penalty kick. In the win
at Rhodes the teams exchanged goals before Brad Kean delivered the
game-winner on Beau Sorg's assist at 56:01. Sorg finished the day
with two goals and one assist. DePauw is 7-3-1 overall and 4-2 in
SCAC play and travels to Southwestern and Trinity this weekend.
Hendrix went 2-0-1 on the week with a
non-conference win over Williams Baptist College on Monday night,
before picking up a pair of big decisions in SCAC action over the
weekend. The Warriors took down DePauw, 2-0, on Friday night and
then tied Centre, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon. Hendrix now stands at
7-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play. Head coach Doug Mello
has now accumulated 398 career-wins as a men’s coach and will
look for number 399 when they host Sewanee on Oct. 23.
Warriors’ sophomore forward Duncan Keegan scored a hat trick
to lead his team to a 7-1 win over Williams Baptist Monday night.
The Warriors then picked up their first ever win over DePauw on
Friday after a brilliant goal from Keegan and a penalty kick from
senior defender Thomas Robins. Hendrix first year Dylan Reed scored
his team’s lone goal in what was a very aggressive match
against Centre on Sunday. A batch of cautions were handed out
between the two teams, including a red card on Hendrix senior
captain Will Brown in the 59th minute. The Warriors held strong and
denied Centre of a game winner, despite playing a man down for 50
minutes.
Millsaps split a
conference weekend at home this past weekend to move to 7-6 overall
and 2-4 in league play, topping Southwestern 3-2 behind a pair of
goals from freshman Daniel Moise, and falling in a heartbreaker to
No. 8 Trinity University in double overtime, 3-2. Senior Brandon
Mong scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner against SU,
while freshman GK Stephen Andrieu racked up 13 total saves on the
weekend with a .765 save percentage. Millsaps missed the biggest
upset in school history on Sunday against Trinity by 2:18, allowing
the game-tying goal in the 88th minute and then the game-winning
goal in the 102nd minute of double overtime. Millsaps will continue
a four-match homestand Wednesday night, welcoming Haverford College
(Pa.) to Harper Davis Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Oglethorpe split two non-conference matches this
past week, falling at home to Emory 3-1 and winning on the road at
LaGrange, 5-1. The Petrels got a direct kick goal from sophomore
Nathan Post to take Emory into a 1-1 tie at the conclusion of the
first half of that match. The Eagles, however, managed to find the
back of the net twice in the game’s final 9 minutes to secure
the 3-1 win. Against LaGrange, Oglethorpe recorded five assisted
goals on strikes from Nathan Post, Nick Harris, Justin Graves, Ben
Robertson and Evan Britton. Collecting the assists for the Petrels
were Aaron Walker, Russell Thompson, Gardar Sigurdsson, Casey
Sheppard and Ben Robertson. The Petrels are now a level 5-5-1 on
the season and will get set to travel out west this weekend for
contests against Austin and Colorado College.
Rhodes played their first game of the weekend
Friday night in the stadium at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, but
they were unable to hold off the Colonels of Centre College
(10-3-2). Centre started the scoring off fairly early, and the
players went into half time with a score of Centre 1, Rhodes 0. The
second half looked promising for the Lynx, but a second goal for
the Colonels early in the second half made it difficult for the men
to fight back. The final score was 3-1, with Michael Pappas scoring
a late goal on a pass from Logan Eberly to put the Cats on the
board. Justin Stradley played all 90 minutes in net for Rhodes,
tallying 3 saves. On Sunday, the men were back on their home field
to play DePauw University (7-4-1). Both teams played very well, and
Rhodes was putting a lot of pressure on the Tigers' defense. Zac
Berry started off the scoring with an assist from Eric Stradley to
take an early 1-0 lead, but Beau Sorg responded just minutes later
to tie the game at 1. Just before halftime, Petar Radujkovic put
away a ball from Jim Thompson to go up a goal, but they were unable
to hold onto the 2-1 halftime lead. Two quick goals by DePauw in
the early part of the second half proved to be just enough to
overtake the Lynx, and the final score was 3-2 DePauw. William Lay
played all 90 minutes in net for the Lynx, coming up with some huge
saves to keep the men in the game
Sewanee played at Maryville Saturday afternoon and
fell to the Scots of Maryville 2-0. The Scots scored both goals in
the second period after a defensive, scoreless first. Maryville
outshot Sewanee 21-8 and took seven corner kicks compared to four
for Sewanee. In goal, Freddie Delchamps (Helena, Ala., Indian
Springs) had 15 saves on the day for Sewanee. Matt Lightfoot
(Germantown, Tenn., Germantown) took a pair of shots to lead
Sewanee, but none found its mark. Sewanee is now 7-4 and is still
unbeaten in SCAC play at 3-0. The Tigers will play SCAC matches at
Colorado College and Austin College in Colorado and Texas next
weekend.
Southwestern dropped two games this weekend to
fall to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference action. Friday,
senior Josh Spencer scored two goals but they weren’t enough
to boost SU past Millsaps. Sunday, SU jumped out to an early lead
and maintained it through the first half due to 10 saves by
sophomore keeper Nick Pierce, but BSC scored two goals midway
through the second half to take the 2-1 win. Southwestern out-shot
its opponents 47-23 over the weekend. The Pirates will return to
action at home on Friday against DePauw and then face Centre on
Sunday.
No. 12 Trinity finished 1-0-1 over the past week,
playing in a pair of overtime road games against SCAC opponents.
The Tigers opened the weekend with a 1-1 double-overtime tie
against Birmingham-Southern College, giving up the lead in the 81st
minute of play. It was Trinity that was trailing late in the game
on Sunday, needing a goal in the 88th minute to tie things up and
force overtime. Just under three minutes into the second overtime
period at Millsaps, the Tigers scored to pull off the victory. Ben
Grossman scored late in regulation to send the game into extra
periods, while Alan Castillejos throw-in led to the game-winning
goal by Alan Llobet. Trinity will host Centre and DePauw for a
weekend of SCAC action in San Antonio. The Tigers scored three
unanswered goals to defeat Centre 3-2 in Danville, Kentucky, last
season. Trinity and DePauw tied in a double-overtime game that saw
DePauw tie the game as time ran out in regulation.
