AROUND THE SCAC
Austin College got
211 yards passing and three touchdowns from Andy Braly and 139
yards and a score on the ground from Ross Hasten as the 'Roos
topped Rhodes College 31-21 on Saturday. With the win, Austin
College is now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play. After the Lynx scored on a 26 yard run to take an
early lead, the 'Roos responded with 17 straight to close out the
first half and head into the locker room leading 17-7. Braly found
Greg Harrell for a 13 yard touchdown strike to open the second half
and push the Austin College lead to 24-7 early in the third
quarter. Rhodes would respond with a touchdown of their own in the
third, but another pass from Braly to Harrell, this one for 28
yards, put the 'Roos back on top 31-14 and Austin College would
hold on for the 10 point victory. Braly completed 13-of-20 passes
and added 29 yards on the ground, while Hasten rushed 22 times and
averaged 6.3 yards per attempt. Harrell finished with 61 yards on
four catches and Phillip Gonzales added 63 yards on three
receptions with a touchdown. Matt Finke, Evan Coachman and Tanner
Martin each had eight tackles to lead the 'Roos, who are off next
week.
Birmingham-Southern moved to 4-3 on the season
this week with a 34-17 come-from-behind road win against Sewanee.
BSC has now surpassed the number of wins recorded both last season
and 2007, when the team went 3-7 both years. Freshman tailback
Shawn Morris had a break-out day, scoring three touchdowns. Junior
wide receiver David Langston also returned a punt 68 yards for a
touchdown, and junior tailback Walter Arrington recorded a six-yard
touchdown. Morris now leads the team on the ground with 386 rushing
yards and six touchdowns on 55 carries, followed closely by
Arrington with 377 yards and six touchdowns on 72 carries. Langston
also leads with 241 receiving yards, and junior quarterback Joe
Thigpen leads with 819 passing yards and five touchdowns. BSC
returns home for its next two games, beginning with a Halloween
match-up with DePauw this weekend at noon at Panther Stadium.
Centre saw three streaks snapped in its 24-0 loss
to Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. Saturday. The Colonels 10-game
winning streak, the third longest in Division III at the time, came
to an end. Prior to this game, Centre had gone 99 straight games
without being shutout. It was the first time a Colonel offense
failed to score since Oct. 23, 1999 in a 38-0 loss to Trinity, and
only the second time since head coach Andy Frye took over. In
addition, Centre's consecutive game streak of 49 straight games of
forcing at least one turnover also came to an end as Millsaps did
not turn the ball over at all. Centre, now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in
the SCAC will host Rhodes this weekend as part of Centre's
Homecoming weekend.
DePauw improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC
and extended its win streak to four with a 26-18 win over Trinity.
The victory was the first for DePauw over Trinity in 11 tries.
Trailing 10-6 at halftime, DePauw scored touchdowns on both of its
third-quarter possessions to take a 20-10 lead. They extended it to
26-10 on Spud Dick's 2-yard pass to Anthony Meek in the fourth
which capped an 81-yard drive. Trinity scored with 2:02 left and
added the two-point conversion, but DePauw recovered the onside
kick. DePauw rushed for a season-high 249 yards with Jon Ellis
totaling 121 and Derrick Karazsia adding a career-high 119. Dick
completed 19-of-28 passes for 183 yards with nine passes going to
Brayden Dahlstrom for a career-high 102 yards. Kyle Sherer totaled
12 tackles, while Thomas Wrona had nine including a team-high three
for losses totaling 4 yards. The Tigers outgained Trinity 432-306
and held a 249-133 advantage on the ground. Trinity entered the
game with the nation's 16th-best rushing defense, statistically,
holding opponents to just 72.0 rushing yards per game. DePauw's 5-1
start is the best since the 2005 team opened with a 7-1 mark. Bryan
Mulligan moved into second place on DePauw's all-time receptions
list with 187 and needs nine more to top the mark of 195 set by Jay
True (1977-80). Mulligan also ranks second in SCAC history and is
26 behind Jason Hunt's (Trinity, 1999-02) record of 213. Dick's
7,985 career passing yards rank fourth in SCAC history and his 65
career touchdown passes is tied for fifth in SCAC history.
Millsaps (5-3, 4-1
SCAC) kept its conference championship hopes alive with a 24-0
shutout win over No. 25 Centre College on Saturday, limiting the
Colonels to a season-low 219 yards and snapping their 10-game win
streak. The win for Millsaps marked its 10th-straight at home in
the regular season dating back to 2007, while keeping Centre
winless in Jackson since 2000. A stifling defense picked off a pair
of Grant Conliffe passes in the second half and had a total of 11
quarterback hurries on the day to earn its first shutout win since
2007 over Centre. Senior QB Chris Graves finished 21 of 35 for 261
yards and three touchdowns, hitting 10 different receivers on the
day. He's now thrown for 17 touchdowns and no interceptions the
last five weeks, a stretch of 164 passes without an interception.
Tye Menist caught a career-high two touchdowns, including a
19-yarder early in the second half. Millsaps will hit the road next
weekend for its final conference game of the year, traveling to
Sewanee for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. A Millsaps win over Sewanee will
secure a fourth-straight SCAC Championship, but will not guarantee
a playoff berth. SID Kevin Maloney will handle the play-by-play on
the webcast feed, filling in for Derrel Palmer.
Rhodes lost their sixth consecutive game of the
2009 season to Austin College, 31-21 before a homecoming crowd of

McMurray rushed for a season high 128 yards on 16 carries and
scored a 26 yard touchdown run to lead the offense. Junior
linebacker Andrew Meier had 16 tackles and senior defensive back
Andy Boucher had 12 tackles to pace the defense. The Lynx travel to
Danville, KY to face Centre College on October 31st.
Saturday was Sewanee's annual Hall of Fame Game
and the Tigers got up on the visiting Birmingham-Southern Panthers
3-0 early on a Geoff Marolda field goal and then led 17-7 early in
the third after a Ben Cleveland touchdown run and a Chalankis Brown
runback. In the second half, a series of Sewanee turnovers set up
27 unanswered BSC points and the Panthers walked away with the
34-17 win over the host Tigers. Michael Poarch led Sewanee with 74
yards rushing on 23 carries. Patrick Shelton threw for 137 yards.
On defense, Zac Atkins led Sewanee with nine tackles and senior

Sewanee and four tackles. Bakari Faulkner had three tackles for
loss on the day, including two sacks. Sewanee is now 0-7 so far in
2009 and will host Millsaps next week before traveling to Rhodes on
November 14.
Trinity lost for the first time in 11 meetings
against DePauw this past weekend, falling in a 26-18 game at
Greencastle, Ind. After scoring just before the end of the second
quarter, the Trinity Tigers held a 10-6 lead at halftime and seemed
to be recovered from a slow start. DePauw outscored Trinity 14-0 in
the third quarter, though, and a late fourth-quarter touchdown made
it 26-10 with less than five minutes to play. Trinity rallied with
a touchdown and a two-point conversion, but DePauw recovered the
onside kick and effectively sealed the victory. Riley Curry caught
a career-high 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdowns, while Caleb
Urban finished with 134 all-purpose yards. Curry moves into second
place on the all-time receptions list at Trinity, becoming only the
second player in school history to record 200 or more receptions in
a career. Caleb passed older brother Jerheme as Trinity’s
career leader in kickoff return yards, becoming just the second
player in school history to reach 1,000 return yards. Trinity will
return home this weekend, hosting NAIA Azusa Pacific University on
Halloween afternoon. The only time the two schools have met was in
2004, which was a 30-14 win by Azusa.
