SUWANEE Ga. - Trinity returned to SCAC action after two weeks off and remained undefeated on the season after wins over Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps. The Tigers are now 9-0 on the year having won ten games in a row dating back to last year and have only given up one goal all season.

Austin College was
idle this week, the “Roos will return to action this Friday
at home against Oglethorpe.
Birmingham-Southern (7-5-0) Panthers split a tough
pair of matches this weekend with no. 6 Trinity and Southwestern.
Trinity shutout the Panthers on Friday 3-0, but BSC got back on the
smiling side of the scoreboard on Sunday with a hard faught
overtime win against Southwestern, 3-2. Trinity did not score its
first goal until the 31st minute on Friday, but scored two more
goals less than ten minutes into the second half for the 3-0 win.
The Panthers were held scoreless into halftime of Sunday's match
with the Pirates, but three minutes into the second half the
Panther's offense woke up. Sara Menton connected with a feed from
Linda Amaya to tie the match at 1-1 in the 48th-minute, and Lydia
Rice scored off a free kick in the 61st to put the Panthers up 2-1.
The Pirates re-tied the score in the 67th-minute at two goals
apiece. The Panthers were unable to retake the lead in the period,
though Serena Murphy came very close in the final minute of
regulation with a shot that rolled just wide right of the post to
force the game into overtime. Both teams continued to battle into
the extra time, but the Panthers came out on top thanks to a Linda
Amaya goal from Alicia Plotky six minutes into the overtime period.
The Panthers will return to the field this Friday, but they'll be
doing it on Hawaiian time. BSC will travel to Laie to take on
BYU-Hawai'i before heading to Kaneohe on Saturday to face Hawai'i
Pacific University. Aloha!
Friday night in Memphis, Tennesee, after heavy rains that would
force a change of venue and a delayed kick-off time -
Centre tied Rhodes College 0-0 through two
overtime periods. For the Colonels, the match was certainly a tale
of two halves. Though the Colonels would see a very sluggish first
half, they would make some much needed adjustments at the half and
go on to play a much improved second half. For the match, Centre
outshot Rhodes 12-3 and would lead the Lynx in corner attempts at
6-5. In a very physical match-up Sunday afternoon, Centre defeated
the Hendrix Warriors 1-0 in Conway Arkansas. Brittany Garr would
score the game winner in the 86th minute off of a solo shot from 20
yards out that went over the head of the goalkeeper. The Colonels
out-shot the Warriors 14-5 and lead in corner attempts 11-2. Centre
would allow only one shot-on-goal for the match. For the season,
Centre has recorded 8 shut-outs. Centre's next match-ups will be on
the road in Texas - Friday, October 16th at Trinity and Sunday,
October 18th at Southwestern.
DePauw scored early goals in both weekend games
and came up with a 1-0 win at Hendrix and a 1-1 tie at Rhodes. Alex
Ehr score just 1:10 into the Hendrix game and it proved to be the
game-winner. Lauren Palfrey and Caroline Kerr split time in goal
for the shutout. Ehr scored just 15 seconds into the game at
Rhodes, but the Lynx scored midway through the second half to tie
the game. DePauw is 4-5-4 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference and
travels to Southwestern and Trinity this weekend.
Hendrix College suffered a pair of 0-1 SCAC losses
over the weekend to DePauw on Friday night and Centre on Sunday
afternoon. The Warriors fell to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in conference
play. They will look to bounce back from the two losses when they
host Sewanee on Oct. 23. The Tigers scored early on a cold and
windy night at Warrior Field and that is all it would take to
defeat the Warriors. Hendrix sophomore goalkeeper Allison Mosley
made nine saves after letting the first shot touch the back of the
net. The Colonels took the opposite route and scored late on
another cold and windy day on the pitch. Centre scored its
game-winner with just 3:52 remaining in regulation.
Millsaps was held without a win this past weekend,
posting a 0-1-1 record with a double overtime draw against
Southwestern University on Friday and a 1-0 loss to No. 6 Trinity
on Sunday. Junior forward Hayley Nemeth scored the Majors’
lone goal on the weekend in the 68th minute against SU to salvage a
tie, while junior goalkeeper Sarah Nelin had nine total saves and a
.818 save percentage. The Majors will continue a four-match
homestand on Oct. 20, welcoming cross-town rival Mississippi
College to Harper Davis Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Oglethorpe won their
only match of the week in style over non-conference foe Atlanta
Christian, 5-0. The Petrels got two first half goals from freshman
Brittany Brotherton that were assisted by fellow freshman Courtney
Phillips to easily outclass the Chargers. Phillips added two goals
of her own in the second half, the first assisted by Shannon
Dougherty and the second by Sasha Alonzo, en route to collecting
six points on the evening. Freshman Jenna Ostuw capped the scoring
on an unassisted effort and Sarah Nania was only tested once in the
goal all evening by Atlanta Christian. The Petrels are now 4-5 on
the season and will travel to Texas this weekend to face Austin
College and the University of Dallas.
Rhodes battled the Colonels of Centre College
Friday night for 110 minutes, but neither team was able to find the
back of the net. Both sides produced chances, but the goalkeepers
played well, coming up with some big saves to keep the clean sheet.
Despite the relentless pressure from the Lynx throughout both
overtimes, the game ended in a 0-0 draw. The women's soccer team
found themselves once again playing in overtime. This time it was
with a score line of 1-1. This marks the third straight SCAC game
that has gone the full 110 minutes of soccer. Rhodes found
themselves down a goal very early in the contest, when Alexandra
Ehr scored just 15 seconds into the game. She was assisted by
Bridget Coleman. The Lynx were able to regroup and fight back to
keep the score line 1-0 at half. The Lynx would answer in the 66th
minute when sophomore Laura Flink (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce) finished
an assist from freshmen Mae Casey (New Orleans, LA/Academy of the
Sacred Heart). The Lynx would press for the game winner, but their
best opportunities were cleared off the line twice by the DePauw
defense. Toward the end of regulation, the Lynx would clear a
DePauw shot off the line as well. Both teams were unable to create
a lot of quality scoring chances in the overtime periods. Senior
Becca Clarin (Clarendon Hills, IL/Hinsdale Central) made 4 saves
for the Lynx. Lauren Palfrey and Caroline Kerr combined for 3 saves
for DePauw. The Tigers would out shoot the Lynx 14-7, but the Lynx
held the advantage in corner kicks 7-2.The Women's Soccer team is
back in action following fall break, when they host Oglethorpe
University on Friday Oct. 23rd. The game will be held at the Mike
Rose Soccer Complex in conjunction with the Wolfe River Soccer
Classic. Game time is scheduled for 5pm.
After Friday's match at Maryville was postponed for weather,
Sewanee hosted NAIA member Milligan Saturday night
and after gaining a 2-0 lead, ended in a 2-2 draw following a
Milligan rally late. Sewanee led 1-0 at the half. Faith Spencer
(New York, N.Y., Hotchkiss) scored Sewanee's first goal, followed
by a successful header by Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga.,
Westminster) in the second. Both goals were assisted by Lacy
Morrison (Signal Mountain, Tenn., Baylor). Sewanee outshot the
Buffaloes 20-9 and took six corner kicks compared to two for
Milligan. Britt Williams (Birmingham, Ala., Altamont) got the start
in goal for Sewanee with a save. The Tigers are now 6-1-2 and are
unbeaten at 2-0-1 in the SCAC. They will play at Dallas and Austin
College next weekend.
Southwestern went 0-1-1 over the tough road trip
weekend. The Pirates found themselves in two overtime matches
including a double-overtime match at Millsaps. Friday, the Pirates
and the Majors could muster one goal a piece and closed the contest
in a 1-1 tie in 2OT. Sunday, Southwestern took on
Birmingham-Southern and the Pirates got on the board early and
maintained their lead through the first half, but the Panthers
scored early in the second to tie it up. After trading goals the
rest of the way the teams found themselves tied 2-2 at the end of
regulation, forcing SU into their second overtime match of the
weekend. This contest would end six minutes into overtime on a BSC
goal to hand the Pirates their third loss of the season. SU sits at
7-3-1 on the season and will host Hardin-Simmons University on
Tuesday in a non-conference match before playing host to DePauw and
Centre on the weekend.
No. 6 Trinity remained unbeaten this season with a
pair of road wins over the weekend. Trinity defeated
Birmingham-Southern 3-0 on Friday night to start the weekend, then
edged Millsaps 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Brianna Young scored the
game-winning goals in both games, as well as adding two assists on
Friday night. Abigail Loar and Kelly Watts also scored a goal and
an assist each for the Tigers against BSC. Katie Garrett had a save
in each game to push the team total to eight shutouts in nine games
this season. Trinity’s defense yielded just seven total shots
in the two games. Trinity will host Centre and DePauw in a pair of
SCAC games this weekend, beginning on Friday night. Last season,
Centre defeated Trinity 1-0 in Danville, Kentucky, with a goal late
in the first half being the only score of the game. Against DePauw
last year, Trinity scored once in each half to earn a 2-0 road win
to finish the regular season.
