Austin College topped
Mary Hardin-Baylor and East Texas Baptist and fell to
Hardin-Simmons during the week to improve to 4-1-1 on the year. On
Tuesday, the 'Roos scored three first half goals on their way to a
3-1 win over UMHB. The goal by the Crusaders was the first
surrendered by Austin College on the year. Annie Gunter and Emma
Treu scored goals in just a 19 second span and Chelsea Parker added
another goal late in the first half in the win. Against HSU, Treu
scored the lone goal to tie the game in the 61st minute before
Hardin-Simmons scored late to hand AC its first loss of the year.
In the last game of the weekend, the 'Roos again got goals from
Gunter and Treu, this time in the span of just under three minutes
midway through the second half and Kaitlin Elledge had her fourth
shutout of the year in goal for Austin College.
Birmingham-Southern took three close matches on
the chin this week, falling 2-0 at Auburn-Montgomery on Monday
before dropping both home matches at the BSC Soccer Classic. All
three matches were close, with BSC giving up just four goals in
three games, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize on their
chances and could never get on the smiling side of the scoreboard.
In their first game of the classic, they outshot Mississippi
College 14-10 but fell 1-0. In the classic final Amber Hernandez
played brilliantly, collecting 13 saves on the match. Berry College
got the match’s only goal off a ricocheted ball from of a
mass of bodies in front of the net. Coach Walton was positive,
calling all three matches good experience for his young team. They
will try to rebound this weekend as they host Emory University on
Friday before traveling to Alabama State on Sunday.
Centre dropped two tough matches this past weekend in the
DePauw Women’s Soccer Showcase. On Friday night against
Wittenberg, the game remained scoreless until the 89th minute of
play. Wittenberg was able to gather a miscleared ball in
Centre’s penalty box which resulted in the late goal.
Saturday evening, despite a solid effort, Centre fell 2-0 to Ohio
Northern University. After the first goal was scored, Centre pushed
more numbers into the attack in an effort to find the equalizer. It
looked as if they might as Centre was able to get behind the Polar
Bear’s defense and create a few dangerous crossing
opportunities. However, in the 79th minute the Polar Bear’s
broke through on a 1v1 and once again found the back of the net.
Centre’s next match-ups will be at home when they face
Hanover College Wednesday, September 16th and Denison University
Saturday, September 19th.
The Tigers recorded a tie in a loss at the DePauw Classic over the
weekend. DePauw battled Ohio Northern to a
scoreless tie on Friday before dropping a 1-0 decision to
Wittenberg on Saturday. Lauren Palfrey posted a shutout in 110
minutes against Ohio Northern. DePauw outshot Wittenberg by a 9-6
count, while Ohio Northern held a 12-9 advantage in shots.

Brothers University. Hendrix improved to 3-0 third straight year
before losing to the Lady Bucs. The Warriors open their SCAC season
this week against Rhodes on Friday. One goal was all the Warriors
needed against Ouachita Baptist, senior forward Blair Sanning
connected just 1:35 into the contest for the game winner. First
year forward Ashley Gallegos led Hendrix with one goal and an
assist against Ozarks, while senior forward Caitlin McGeehan and
sophomore midfielder Tristan Stolz recorded their first goals of
the year to put the game away. Junior forward Lydia Nash scored
Hendrix’s lone goal against Christian Brothers.

LeTourneau University Wednesday night that saw four different
Majors’ players score a goal. The Majors then travelled to
Decatur, Ga. for two matches over the weekend. Behind senior Leslie
Robichaux’s first career hat trick, Millsaps defeated Agnes
Scott College 3-1 Saturday night. Sunday afternoon, the Majors
suffered their first loss of the season after being shutout by
Emory University 3-0. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Nelin improved her
record to 4-1 on the season by recording 16 saves in the three
matches. Millsaps will hit the road this weekend as they take on
Belhaven College Friday night at 8:00 p.m. and Division I opponent
Alcorn State University Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Oglethorpe tied
school records for most goals scored in a game (14) and largest
margin of victory in a 14-0 thrashing of visiting Tennessee Temple
on Salamone Field last Thursday afternoon in their only game of the
week. The Stormy Petrels also topped Fisk College by the same score
on September 30, 2004. Oglethorpe scored early and often against an
overmatched young Crusader team to cruise to the victory. For the
afternoon both Shannon Dougherty and Ryanne Arola recorded hat
tricks with three goals apiece. Lexi Vassell dished three assists
and scored a goal of her own while freshman Courtney Phillips
recorded two assists. Mary Beth Horton posted five points on the
evening with two goals and an assist and Hannah Parker came off the
bench to score the first two goals of her career in the blowout
win. The Petrels outshot the Crusaders 42-2 in the landslide
victory and managed to lift their record to an unblemished 3-0 mark
on the season. The competition will stiffen dramatically, however,
as Oglethorpe braces to host Emory University on Salamone Field
next Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Hardin-Simmons University proved to be too much for
Rhodes in the final game of the ASC-SCAC Challenge
in Abilene, TX. On a cold, wet day in West Texas, HSU defeated the
Lynx 3-0. HSU would score their first goal in the 42nd minute, when
Erin Low assisted Austin Ricker inside the 18 yard box. The Lynx
would come out after the half time break with several good chances,
but were unable to beat Christi Carr in the HSU goal. Katie
Kuykendall would score the 2nd goal for HSU in the 55th minute on
an assist from Carlyn Powers. Hardin-Simmons added the final goal
in the 89th minute when Austin Ricker scored her second goal of the
game from an assist by Chelsea Flores. HSU led in shots and corners
22-2 and 5-2, respectively. Senior Becca Clarin made 10 saves for
the Lynx. Rhodes will open up SCAC play next week when they travel
to Hendrix College.

over Miss. College Sunday afternoon at the Birmingham-Southern
Invitational, the Tigers were named 2009 Tournament Champions for

High School near Memphis at noon on Sunday.
Southwestern had a busy week of action at home
against three ASC teams and went 2-1 on the week to move to 4-1 on
the season. Tuesday, SU faced TLU and dominated the contest staying
in the attacking third of the field for most of the game. Andi
Miller got things started for Southwestern with a beautiful lofting
ball from 35 yards out just 13 minutes into the match, and the
Pirates never looked back winning 3-0. After a long rain delay on
Friday SU and UTD were finally able to hit the field on a soggy
afternoon in Central Texas. One goal in the first six minutes of
the match by A.J. Andreola was all the Pirates needed as they won
1-0. First-year goal keeper Sarah Nonaka had three saves during the
contest. Sunday, The Pirates faced a tough UT-Tyler team and
despite have numerous opportunities in the second half to take the
lead, SU couldn’t seem to find the back of the net and fell
2-1 in a highly contested match. Southwestern will hit the road
again on Friday to face the University of Dallas at 2:00 pm.
No. 13 Trinity remained undefeated with a pair of
home wins over the past week, beating both UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas
by final scores of 4-0. The Tigers had seven different players
score the eight goals over the weekend, with Abigail Loar being the
only player to score more than once. Loar has netted a goal in each
of the team’s first four games, including two game-winning
goals. First-year goalkeeper Katie Garrett recorded eight saves
over the weekend to preserve both shutouts. Garrett has played
every minute in goal for the Tigers this year. Trinity will open up
SCAC play at Austin College on Friday, then finishes off the
weekend at the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers
edged Austin 1-0 in overtime in San Antonio last year, with Brianna
Young scoring in the 107th minute. Eight different players scored
in last season’s 9-0 win over Dallas.
