SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Leading by 28 points late in the third quarter, Schreiner saw its lead cut to three with 3:24 remaining, but the Mountaineers held on and outlasted St. Thomas, 61-54, in women's quarterfinal action Friday afternoon at the 2023 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Schreiner raced out to a 38-19 halftime lead and then pushed its lead to 47-19 at the 6:03-mark of the third quarter before St. Thomas began its nearly miraculous comeback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 47-19, UST started chipping away at the 28-point deficit in the third quarter. The Celts were able to cut the the Mountaineers' lead to just 18 (49-31) after a three-pointer from Amber Bourgeois with 34-seconds left in the quarter.
- The Celts' Ce'briaya Bell made a jumper that pulled UST to withing 12 at 54-42 with seven minutes to play in the fourth.
- A three-pointer from Audrey Hernandez moved UST to within one possession at 54-51 with 3:24 remaining.
- From there, the Mountaineers never let the Celts get closer than three, as Schreiner withstood a furious comeback attempt.
- Schreiner held a slim 39-34 edge in total rebounds.
- St. Thomas held a 29-15 margin in bench points while Schreiner maintained a 32-18 edge in points in the pain.

- Friday’s game was the first-ever meeting in the SCAC tournament between Schreiner and St. Thomas.
- After sweeping the regular season series against the Celts, the Mountaineers pushed their winning streak against St. Thomas to four games. Overall, Schreiner is currently riding a five-game win streak.
- Schreiner advances to the semifinal round for the first time since 2017 and fifth time in program history. Saturday's match-up against Colorado College will be the first time the two teams have played in a SCAC tournament. Schreiner is 1-3 in its previous four semifinal appearances.
- St. Thomas ends its season with a 7-17 record.
