Schreiner Takes Early Lead After First Round of SCAC Men's Golf Championship

WHITNEY, Texas – Schreiner University fired an opening round 294 and leads the field by seven shots after Sunday’s first round of the 2024 SCAC Men’s Golf Championship contested on the New Course at White Bluff Golf Resort. Official Championship Website | Men's Results - Team | Men's Results - Individual | Photo Gallery

Monday's second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT on the par-72, 6,918-yard layout.   

The 16th-ranked Mountaineers, who are seeking their first SCAC men's golf championship since winning back-to-back conference titles in 2014 and 2015, had three players - Drew Hermesmeyer, Matthew McKenzie and Colin Perez - post one-over rounds of 73. The trio are all tied for third in the field of 35 players.

The first round lead is the first for Schreiner since 2018 when the team had to settle for a second-place finish.

Defending champion University of St. Thomas is in second place, seven shots back, with a first round team score of 301 (+13), followed by Trinity University at 304 (+16). The host school, Southwestern University, is in fourth with a first-round score of 306 (+18).

Rounding out the standings, Texas Lutheran University is fifth with a team score of 311 (+23), University of Dallas currently sits in sixth at 314 (+26) and Centenary College is in seventh with a 317 (+29). 

Centenary’s Andrew Bennett sits atop the individual leaderboard and is the only player under par after firing an opening round 71 (-1). His 13 pars tied for the most in Sunday's opening round. Bennett is the first Gent in proghram history to lead the SCAC Championships following the opening round. Following the completion of his first round 71, the SCAC spoke with Bennett about his performance.

Just one shot back is Dallas' Rex Soulliere, who birdied two of the last three holes to finish at even par 72. Soulliere leads the field after the first round with five birdies.

Following the aforementioned Schreiner trio tied for third is a group consisting of Jacob Mason of Trinity, Tobey Wills of Texas Lutheran and teammates Cameron Curtis and Zach Allen of St. Thomas who are tied for sixth at +2 (74).
