SUWANEE, Ga. -- The inaugural D3Baseball.com Team of the Week for the 2024 season was announced on Tuesday and a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) athletes were recognized for their performances through the first two weeks of February.
The reigning SCAC Pitcher of the Week, junior lefty Adrian Montenegro of University of Dallas and junior catcher James Vaquero of Southwestern were both recognized at the national level this week.
Montenegro won twice in the early part of the season. He defeated Sul Ross State in the season opener on February 9th and Howard Payne on February 17th. He pitched into the seventh inning on both occasions totaling 14.2 innings. He has allowed six hits and two walks, striking out 16 for 9.83 strikeouts per nine innings. He finished the first half of February with a 0.61 ERA (1 earned run).
In the Pirates 3-0 series sweep against Sul Ross State, Vaquero totaled six hits, eight runs scored, two home runs, and five RBIs for a .500 batting average on the weekend. Vaquero also collected two stolen bases. Vaquero's eight runs helped the Pirates to twenty-nine total runs scored in the three-game series.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its 13th season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors.
Montenegro is the first UD athlete to earn D3Baseball.com National Team of the Week honors since Tyler Montemayor was recognized back in February 2020, while Vaquero’s award is the first for Southwestern since Maxwell Mims was honored to open the 2023 season.
