PAOLA COLON OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior midfielder on the women's soccer team from Houston, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 26.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

When Paola isn’t dazzling on the field, scoring goals and maneuvering with finesse, she is fervently involved in both her school and the local community. In her leisure hours, Paola's engagement spans across a myriad of organizations. On campus, she holds the esteemed position of chair within the Celts Sports Association, championing sports participation for fellow St. Thomas students. Beyond campus borders, her altruistic endeavors extend to World Gospel Outreach, a faith-based organization dedicated to spreading the gospel and providing medical outreach to communities in South America. Recently, Paola embarked on a mission to Honduras, where she selflessly provided various forms of medical aid, particularly in optical, dental, and general health services.

Paola's dedication also extends deeply into the fabric of the University of St. Thomas Athletic Department. As a stalwart member of the student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC), she proudly represents UST athletics in the broader community, lending support to numerous charities and events. She particularly cherishes memories of the Celts to Cure fundraiser, where SAAC and the Women’s Soccer team joined forces to raise awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Furthermore, in her role as captain of the Women’s Soccer team, Paola firmly believes in the transformative power of giving back, understanding that positive character serves as a beacon for future generations. Amidst the challenges and triumphs of being a student-athlete, Paola emphasizes the contagious nature of good character within the team dynamic. Maintaining positive morale during trying times and fostering a culture of mutual encouragement during practice sessions fosters a sense of familial bond and resilience.

“Paola has been a great inspiration to our team,” Head Women’s Soccer Coach Nataki Stewart added. “She leads by example on and off the field. Some of her biggest traits are, that she is the thermostat for our team, and she sets the temperature or tone in everything we do. She is also the connector who makes sure we maintain an inclusive environment within our soccer family. In addition, she is an energy giver which is quite contagious.”

Finally, Paola expresses profound gratitude to the University of St. Thomas for the pivotal role it has played in shaping her into the individual she is today, opening doors to invaluable opportunities and nurturing her growth along the way.
