SCAC Announces Team Sportsmanship Awards for Spring 2024

SUWANEE, Ga. -- Nine Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference programs were recognized by the league as Spring 2024 Sportsmanship Teams in their respective sports.

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year in an effort to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The spring awards are presented in baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.

Trinity University paced the league with three spring programs earning accolades, followed closely by Texas Lutheran University with two and Austin College, Colorado College, Schreiner University and Southwestern University all collecting one honor each.

Trinity secured top honors in baseball for the second consecutive year followed once again by Texas Lutheran and Schreiner. The Tigers join TLU (2017-19) and Dallas (2021-22) as repeat winners of the SCAC SAAC Baseball Sportsmanship award.

In golf, Trinity captured the team sportsmanship honor for the second time in program history on the men’s side, previously winning back in 2017. Trinity was the top choice with Texas Lutheran finishing second and Southwestern earning third.

For the women, the Tigers completed the sweep as Trinity took top honors for the first time in program history. This marks just the second time in SCAC history one institution has swept the golf team sportsmanship honors, joining Southwestern who accomplished the feat in the spring of 2019. Texas Lutheran secured second in the balloting, while Southwestern and Centenary College finished tied for third.

Southwestern secured top honors in softball for the second time in program history, followed by Trinity and Austin College. The Pirates, who also claimed this award in 2019, join Schreiner (2017, 2021) as the only SCAC softball program to be honored multiple times.

In men's tennis, Austin College and Schreiner tied for the top spot, edging out Southwestern. It marks the second-straight year the Mountaineers have been honored and the first time since 2017 the ‘Roos have been recognized. Schreiner and Austin College are the only two programs in league history to win this honor twice, with the Mountaineers the only team to win accolades in back-to-back years. On the women’s side, Colorado College was voted to the top spot for the first time in program history. Schreiner finished second, while University of St. Thomas and Trinity tied for third.

Texas Lutheran swept the awards on both the men’s and women’s side in track and field. For the men, this marks the third consecutive year the Bulldogs have taken home top honors, a first in the history of the award. The women are taking home top billing for the second-straight year, also a first in SCAC history. This marks the fourth time in league history one institution has swept the track and field sportsmanship honors in a single season (Colorado College, 2017; Southwestern, 2018; Texas Lutheran, 2023).
