Football Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trintiy University picked up their first SCAC win after knocking off Southwestern at home on Saturday afternoon. They will take on a 1-1 Austin College team in Sherman in the final SCAC contest of the year. Texas Lutheran, meanwhile, suffered their first setback of the season thanks to a former conference foe.

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College was idle this past weekend. The ‘Roos will return home next weekend as they welcome in the Trinity Tigers for their final SCAC game of the year. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Southwestern grabbed an early lead before the Trinity Tigers pulled ahead for a 58-20 victory Saturday afternoon in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference football action. Southwestern (0-9, 0-3) was trying to erase a bad memory after being shutout by Trinity (5-4, 1-1) in the first meeting between the two teams. The Pirates were able to capitalize on Tiger turnovers to take a 13-6 lead; however turnovers of their own spelled doom for Southwestern in the second half. Brian Hicks threw for two touchdowns and 224 yards as Matt Gillen caught one of Hicks’ touchdown passes and finished with 129 yards. Colten Shea scored his seventh touchdown of the season while Tyler Petrillo made the move to running back and led the ground attack with 48 yards on 12 carries. Petrillo also scored his first collegiate touchdown in the first half, a score that gave the Pirates a brief lead.

Texas Lutheran suffered their first loss of the season in a 73-44 loss at Hardin-Simmons. ... HSU (4-5) kept TLU (7-1) winless all-time at Shelton Stadium and moved the Cowboys’ lead in the all-time series to 15-1. TLU had won eight games in a row overall after last season’s double-overtime loss to HSU in Seguin. ... This loss severely hurts TLU’s chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Bulldogs were ranked third in the NCAA’s first release of the Division III South Region rankings. ... Against the Cowboys on Saturday, the Bulldogs allowed 584 yards of total offense (297 on the ground), turned the ball over three times and surrendered two safeties on a pair of bad punt snaps. ... The Bulldogs conclude the 2013 regular season with a 1 p.m. home game Saturday against Howard Payne. The Bulldogs will honor their seniors during a pre-game ceremony on the field. ... TLU will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com for next week’s game at Matador Stadium. Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will have the radio call and an audio-only webcast on seguintoday.com. ... Next Saturday’s game in Matador Stadium will be the Bulldogs’ final game at the Seguin ISD facility. TLU will open its new on-campus football and track and field stadium for the 2014 season.

Trinity closed its home schedule with a 58-20 win over Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon, finishing with a flurry by outscoring the visitors 24-0 in the fourth quarter.  The Tigers also recorded a shutout win over Southwestern earlier this season, winning 30-0 in Georgetown, Texas.The 58 points scored by the Tigers were the most since a 56-point game against Howard Payne last season, and were tied for the 15th-most points ever scored by a Trinity team. The Tigers finish the regular season schedule with a road game at Austin College on Saturday, which will also be the final SCAC game of the year for both teams. The teams played a non-conference game in San Antonio earlier this year, and Trinity took a 26-3 victory.
