SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University rising senior women’s soccer player Emily Jorgens finished third in Elite 89 national voting, conducted by the NCAA.

Jorgens was the top vote-getter among the candidates who compete in Division III sports.

The Elite 89 Award is presented to student-athletes with the highest grade point average at each of the NCAA Championships. Jorgens fit the bill with a perfect 4.00 GPA, and won the award last December at the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships in San Antonio. The event was co-hosted by Trinity and San Antonio Sports.

The NCAA took all of the Elite 89 winners and placed their information on a website. Fans had the opportunity to vote for their favorite “Elite 89er.”

Jorgens made it all the way to the finals, and chalked up 2,278 votes. The winner was Courtney Albritton of Valdosta State University (Georgia) (Division II Softball, 8,689 votes). Vanessa Gagnon of Clarkson University (New York) (National Women’s Collegiate Ice Hockey) was runner-up, with 7,778 votes.

The Tiger midfielder was a key factor in Trinity women’s soccer’s most successful season in their history. Trinity, led by Head Coach Lance Key, advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship game, played at San Antonio’s Toyota Field. The Tigers opened the event with a 2-1 victory over Middlebury College (Vermont), and lost 2-0 to William Smith College (New York) in the final.

During the championship event, Jorgens tied an NCAA single-season record in assists, with 30. She was subsequently named to the All-Tournament Team.

Jorgens earned a number of high national honors, in addition to the Elite 89 Award, including selection as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year, and a slot on the First Team of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America Team.

In the classroom, Jorgens is a business administration major, with minors in Spanish and sport management. She has also been a member of Trinity’s Dean’s List for three years.

Jorgens is also involved with the community, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, and San Antonio’s Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children.
