HAILE HERNANDEZ OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a junior on the women's soccer team from Galveston, Texas,, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 1.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Hernandez has always felt the need to give back to her community. As an active member of First Lutheran Church and their young adult youth group, she has been given the opportunity to impact many lives throughout Galveston County with her service. The service projects she and her peers participate in range from handing out blankets to those in need and providing food for tens of thousands of people.

The largest event Hernandez participates in is Feed Galveston, which serves the community by providing and prepping food for the Galveston County Food Bank. The food bank sorts, warehouses, and distributes over 7 million pounds of food each year. This event provides over 50,000 meals for individuals who face food insecurities. Each year, Hernandez and First Lutheran Church of Galveston gather 2-3 times to package.

"I feel that being from Galveston and growing up here most of my life, you see thing that make you want to help the community,” said Hernandez.

Now entering her junior season and tabbing the title of an upperclassmen, Haile uses her knowledge and experiences from volunteering every day on the pitch, and holding the opportunity to be a student-athlete means a lot to Hernandez.

“We are lucky to be able to not only play the sport we love but to also be in college,” said Hernandez. “We have to use this (opportunity) to help others.”

Hernandez has been held an integral role in the Celts success since joining the program. After a winning a Red River Athletic Conference championship her freshman year, she turned her focus to constructing a seamless transition into the SCAC and NCAA Division III. In just their second year as members, the Celts have been picked to finish fourth in the league.
