LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's swimming and diving season got underway as four of the league's seven teams met at Colorado College's Schlessman Natatorium for a weekend of round-robin dual meets.
In Friday's first action, the McMurry University men defeated Austin College, 138-38, as the War Hawks McMurry claimed first place in all 26 events on the day.
Higlighting McMurry's efforst in the pool were a pair of double-winners as sophomore Terrin Boehmer snagged first place in the 200 free (1:55.74) and 100 back (59.88), and freshman Jonathan McInroe had first place showings in both the 1000 free (12:10.23) and 500 free (5:38.70).
Friday's second dual of the day saw Cade Thumann, Mac O'Brien and Tony Saenz each pick up a pair of individual events to lead the Colorado College men's swimming and diving team to a 178-44 victory over the University of the Ozarks. The Tigers captured all but one event against the Eagles.
Thumann placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly races, while Saenz, a freshman, won the 1000 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events. Saenz also swam third on the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay, joining Walker Martin, Julian Frerichs and Cole Thumann.
O'Brien, meanwhile, won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events on Friday.
On Saturday, the Colorado College men put together their second straight dominating night, defeating SCAC foe Austin College, 161-15. Cade Thumann and Tony Saenz each won a pair of races for the second time in as many days. Thumann captured the 50- and 500-yard freestyle races, while Saenz touched first in the 400 individual medley and 200 breaststroke.
Sophomores Topher Shepherd and Ben Laidlaw each won an individual race and swam on a winning relay team. Shepherd won the 100 freestyle and anchored the 200 freestyle relay, while Laidlaw captured the 200 backstroke and led off the 400 medley relay.
Saturday's final dual was the closest of the weekend as the McMurry men secured their second dual win of the meet with a nail-biting finish in the final heat of the day, finishing with a 100-89 victory over University of the Ozarks.
Leading by four points headed into the final event, the 200 free relay, Myles Pickens, Isaiah Naryaez, Jonathan McInroe and Eduardo Gonzalez teamed up to earn the victory in a time of 1:35.45 to seal the win for McMurry.
Terrin Boehmer was a double winner for the War Hawks, posting first-place finishes in the 400 IM (5:03.06) and the 200 back (2:23.85).
The 2021 swimming and diving schedule continues next week with four of the league's seven teams in action, highlighted by a conference double dual meet when Centenary and McMurry travel to Austin College on Saturday.
