CALEN ANDERSON OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a sophomore forward on the men's basketball team from League City, Texas, has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning April 12.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Anderson, who is only in his second year at UST, is already making a name for himself around campus and within the community. He is an active member of the Black Student Union, has served on the Leadership Council, as well as the University’s Diversity Council and works around campus as a Nursing Assistant and for Student Activities.

The Leadership Council he’s stands on allows older students to mentor incoming Celts and guide them as they acclimate to UST.

“I feel as student-athletes, it’s important for us to help around the community because we are some of the first people you see when on campus or around the area” Anderson said. “We are automatically put in leadership positions so it’s important to help and let people know that we are there for them.”

Calen is also an event organizer for the Black Student Union here at St. Thomas. The BSU’s goal is to serve as a voice for black students on campus and in the community. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has hampered their vision of participating in community service events and starting a mentoring program for the youth this year. However, in the future they will continue to grow and make a positive impact on campus.

“As a member of BSU, it’s our job to be the ones to lend a helping hand and be there to support people during tough times” said Anderson. “When a social issue arises we feel that we should be the first ones to speak up and guide people through that, or just be a shoulder to lean on.”

The high-flying sophomore has played an integral role for UST Men’s Basketball during both of their championship seasons. As the Celts go for their third consecutive title, Anderson will use the experience and knowledge he’s gained through serving the UST community.

“My involvement has helped me on the court because I’ve improved my communication skills” Anderson said. “In BSU we bounce ideas around and discuss the different ways we’d like the organization to go, so I’ve really been able to sharpen these skills.”
