KERRVILLE, Texas -- Following heavy rainfall in the Kerrville area over the past 24 hours, and after consultation with the head coaches and athletic directors of the involved schools, the conference office announced changes to the 2021 SCAC Softball Tournament format and schedule.
Weather forced the halt of this year's tournament after just two contests went final with No. 5 Centenary defeating No. 4 Southwestern, 10-6, in game one and No. 3 Trinity knocking off No. 6 Dallas, 10-1, in game two. Game three will be considered a no-contest between top-seeded Texas Lutheran and Centenary having played just two innings before weather moved into the area. Southwestern and Dallas have been eliminated following their losses in the opening two games.
After meeting with administrators and the tournament coaches, with the goal of determining a champion on the field, the surviving teams – No. 1 Texas Lutheran, No. 2 Schreiner, No. 3 Trinity and No. 5 Centenary – will compete for the conference title.
Texas Lutheran has been advanced to Monday’s championship, with the remaining three teams battling in a single elimination format for the right to face the Bulldogs for the title. The last standing team between Schreiner, Trinity and Centenary will have to beat Texas Lutheran twice on Monday to be crowned champions. TLU needs just one win on Monday to retain its SCAC title and receive the conference’s AQ bid into the NCAA Div. III Softball Championship.
Trinity will face Centenary at 4 p.m. CT Sunday, and the winner of that game will meet Schreiner at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
The winner of the late game with Schreiner advances to play TLU on Monday at 11 a.m. CT. Again, the winner of the Schreiner vs. Centenary/Trinity game must defeat TLU twice on Monday to claim the conference championship.
If Mountaineer Field is not playable for the 4 p.m. game on Sunday, the tournament will be called, and TLU will be crowned the conference champion.
