SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University women extended their lead over second-place Southwestern University on Day Two of the 2021 SCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship, vaulting to a 697-541 lead with one session remaining. As has been the case with most collegiate competition this academic year, the 2021 championships have been modified due to COVID-19 protocol. The meet itself has been condensed from its normal four-day schedule to a three-day event. Additionally, the meet is being conducted as two separate events with the women's teams swimming in the early afternoon and men's teams competing later in the afternoon. All heats are being swam as timed finals with no preliminaries.
Following behind Trinity and Southwestern in the standings is Centenary College with 337 points, followed closely by Colorado College with 328. Austin College is fifth with 229 points, University of the Ozarks is seventh with 197 points and McMurry University is eighth with 135.
Trinity opened the Friday session by earning its third relay victory in as many swims, taking first-place in the 200 medley relay. The team of senior Mabel Fowler, junior Jadyn Trahan, freshman Caroline Myers and junior Morgen Reyna took top honors with a swim of 1:46.70 - the fifth-fastest time in SCAC championship history. Southwestern University was second in a time of 1:47.26 and Centenary College was third with a finishing time of 1:51.42.
In the first individual event of the day, Trinity's Fowler took her second individual title of the meet, winning the 400 IM with a finishing time of 4:33.59 - the fifth-fastest in SCAC Championship meet history. The win marked her 10th individual career title at the SCAC Championships but her first in the 400 IM. Southwestern freshman Maysen Hauck placed second in a time of 4:42.33 and Trinity sophomore Kari Petersen was third in 4:48.83.
After winning the event as a freshman and finishing third a year ago, Southwestern junior Jesse Stovall earned her second career title in the 100 fly, touching first in a time of 57.20. Trinity's Myers was second in a time of 57.58 and junior Brianna Serret of Centenary finished third in 58.30.
Trinity freshman Emma Hagan continued the Tigers' dominance in the 200 free, touching first in a time of 1:54.36 and giving the program its ninth straight victory in the event. Trinity finished 1-2-3 in the event for the fourth consecutive year as teammates Morgan Reyna and junior Meghan Magill finished in times of 1:55.14 and 1:55.78, respectively.
Southwestern senior Rehgan Hartsell (pictured) made history in the 100 breaststroke, becoming the first swimmer in league history - male or female - to win the event four straight years. Hartsell, who holds both the Championship and Open record in the event, finished atop this year's leaderboard in a time of 1:06.04. Centenary junior Kaylin Swoboda placed second in 1:06.37, her third consecutive year to finish as runner-up to Hartsell. Trinity's Trahan was third in a time of 1:07.47.
Centenary's Serret gave the program its first-ever individual win in the 100 back - and just the third individual win by a Ladies' swimmer since the institution joined the conference prior to the 2013 season. Trinity senior Caroline North was second in a time of 59.36 and Southwestern sophomore Emma Frey was third in 1:01.30.
In the final swimming event of the session, the Trinity women won its fourth straight relay, taking the 800 freestyle relay by a comfortable margin and in a time of 7:43.03 - the fourth-fastest time in SCAC Championship history. The team of Fowler, Reyna, Hagan and Magill posted the winning time. Southwestern placed second in a time of 7:59.49 and Colorado College was third in a time of 8:06.80.
The diving portion of the competition got underway on Friday afternoon as the women were on the 1-meter board. Trinity junior Katarina Partalas won her second consecutive low board at the SCAC meet, taking this year's event with a final score of 482.80 - the fourth-best score in championships history. Her teammate, sophomore Gabi Fulk, was second with a score of 434.10 and Colorado College sophomore Peyton Classon was third with a score of 396.45.
