Trinity, ranked second in the NCAA Division III West Region, improved to 9-7 on the season. St. Thomas wrapped up the campaign with a 6-6 mark.
The defending champion Tigers advanced to the SCAC final for the ninth time in a row, and will play the winner of top seed Southwestern University and No. 4 Schreiner University. The match is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity’s Butch Newman Tennis Center. The Tigers have also won eight SCAC Championships in a row and 23 overall.
Trinity won the top-two doubles lines by scores of 8-0. Megan Flores and Cate Cushing, ranked second in the West Region doubles, won the first line over Anamaria Gonzalez and Alejandra Lopez. Twin sisters Zoe Kaffen and Mary Kaffen, ranked fifth regionally, captured No. 2 doubles, beating Asan Atilla and Karissa Guzman. Ellie Hughes and Annie Wise finished off the tandem competition by winning the third line 8-4 over Alyssa Davila and Anna Ta..
Elodie Richard gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead by winning No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Guzman. The clincher came on the fourth line as Mary Kaffen bested Atilla 6-2, 6-1.
Zoe Kaffen, ranked fourth in the region, won the first set 6-4 and was leading 3-2 on the top line over Gonzalez when the match was called. Cushing and Lopez were tied at 6-all in the first set of No. 2 singles. Flores took the first set 6-4 and was leading 2-1 in the second over Davila on line three. Paulina Garcia won the opening set of the sixth match 6-2 and led 2-1 in a pairing with Callighan Ard.
