LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams were in action this week, putting together an overall record of 4-11.
Austin College began their season with two wins this weekend, while the University of Dallas added two wins to improve to 4-0.
Colorado College fell in both of their games to NCAA Division II opponents, including a loss to No. 17 UC-Colorado Springs.
Austin College
The ‘Roos earned two wins this week, beginning with
a 77-73 defeat of Sul Ross State Friday night. Jeremy Swisher led
the way in the game, putting up 16 points while shooting 5-11 from
the field and 6-7 from the charity stripe. Kevin Graham was the
only other player in double digits, putting up 10 points. Alvin
Michael led the ‘Roos with eight rebounds, while Austin Freet
put up seven. The ‘Roos shot 43.1% from the field (25-58) and
made 21 free throws on 35 attempts. The ‘Roos took on Howard
Payne Saturday afternoon, earning a 72-64 win. Cedric Hudson led
the team with 20 points, shooting 8-10 from the field and 3-6 from
the free throw line. Alan Sullivan marked 13 points in the game
while Swisher added 12. Freet put up a team-leading 10 rebounds in
the game. The ‘Roos shot 44.3% from the field and earned 39
points from bench players.
Centenary College
The Gents dropped two games this weekend as they took on
McMurry University Thursday evening and East Texas Baptist
University Saturday afternoon. The Gents opened their home campaign
against McM, but fell 94-89 to the Warhawks. Five Centenary players
marked double-digit scoring efforts in the game, led by Kendall
Demouchet who put up 13 points. Caden Cheramie put up a
team-leading eight rebounds and seven assists, while also adding
three steals. The Gents shot 42.3% from the field and got 42 points
from the bench. They also forced 19 turnovers by the Warhawks.
Saturday, the Gents fell to ETBU 78-64. Cheramie led the team with
18 points, one of three Centenary players to mark double digits.
Cheramie also put up four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Demouchet marked 15 points in the game, putting up five rebounds.
James Sapp rounded out the double-digits scorers, putting up 13
points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Colorado College
The Tigers fell to2-2 on the season after dropping two
games this weekend to in-state opponents Colorado Mesa and
UC-Colorado Springs. The Tigers almost pulled out a win Friday
against CMU, but fell 71-70. Chris Lesnansky put up 22 points to
lead all players, shooting 10-17 from the field. Lesnansky also
marked four rebounds, three assists and three blocks in the game.
Luke Winfield put up 14 points and Justin Berardino added 11 to
round out the double-digit scorers. The Tigers shot 44.8% from the
field and 40% from behind the arc. Friday evening, CC faced
cross-town foe UCCS, who was ranked No. 17 in the NABC Preseason
Coaches’ Poll, falling 76-55. Lesnansky led the way again,
putting up 17 points on 6-11 shooting. James Lonergan marked seven
rebounds in the game to lead the Tigers.
University of Dallas
Dallas improved to 4-0 this weekend with two wins over
Howard Payne and Sul Ross State. Friday night, the Crusaders took
on HPU, defeating them 71-56 at home. Michael Sarrat and Aaron
Wyatt each put up 16 points, which led all players. Sarrat shot 4-6
from behind the arc, while Wyatt shot 6-10 from the field and added
four free-throws. Tom Kaiser was the third Crusader in
double-digits, putting up 14 points on 7-8 shooting. Kaiser and
Wyatt led the team with seven rebounds apiece, while Lorenzo
Gonzalez led all players with seven assists. Dallas shot impressive
marks of 59% from the field and 70% from behind the arc. In
Saturday’s win, the Crusaders took down SRSU 79-76 in an
overtime battle. Three UD players put up double-digits, all over 20
points. Wyatt led all players again, putting up 24 points, while
Sarrat and Mark Promberger each added 21 points. Sarrat added four
three-pointers again, while shooting 8-16 from the field. Wyatt and
Promberger each led with 10 rebounds , while Wyatt added three
assists and two steals. Kym Malon led all players with seven
assists. The Crusaders shot 46.2% from the field and outrebounded
SRSU 42-36.
Schreiner University
Schreiner picked up their first loss of the season,
falling to Concordia 103-86 Saturday afternoon. Phillip Kee led the
team with 17 points, shooting a perfect 8-8 from the field. Stevan
Guerrero and Christian Pena each added 14 points while Maverick
Harris rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, also
shooting a perfect mark from the field (4-4), 3-3 from behind the
arc. Pena led the team with five rebounds, also adding two assists
and two steals. Guerrero and Adrian Martin led the team with three
assists. The Mountaineers shot 47-7% from the field and got 46
points from bench players. The defense forced Concordia into 21
turnovers, earning 23 points.
Southwestern University
The Pirates opened their season against Hardin-Simmons
this week, but fell 70-57. Travis Kurtz led the team with nine
points, shooting 3-7 from the field, while also adding a steal and
a block. Blake Scott was right behind him with eight points,
putting up a team-leading seven rebounds and two blocks. The
Pirates shot 43.8% from the field and picked up 31 total rebounds
in the game. The defense forced 16 turnovers, which led the 24
points.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs took on Concordia this week, falling 109-93
at home. Five Bulldogs scored in double digits, led by Zach Behr
who put up 17 points. Sterling Holmes was right behind Behr,
putting up 15 points, while Garrett Wilkins added 13, Jordan
Kouremetis had 11 and Josh Sanchez rounded it out with 10. Holmes
and Donte McGee each put up five rebounds to lead the team, while
Wilkins led all Bulldogs with three assists. Holmes also put up
three steals. The Bulldogs shot 50% forom the field and 67.9% from
the charity stripe, making 38 free throws on 56 attempts, just
three less than the SCAC record.
Trinity University
Trinity played three games this week, falling in all
three. The Tigers began the week against Mary Hardin-Baylor,
falling 78-51 to the Cru. AJ Pulliam led the team with eight
points. The Tigers shot 26.9% from the field and 42.9% from the
free-throw line. On Friday evening, TU traveled to California to
take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but fell 64-54.Pulliam led the team
again, putting up 14 points on 4-10 shooting, 3-5 from behind the
arc. Clark led the team with six rebounds, while Craig Saltarelli
put up three assists to lead. The Tigers shot 39.2% from the field,
while going 8-22 from three-point range. The game remained close
throughout the first half, as there were three ties and eight lead
changes. The Tigers finished out their week against Pomona-Pitzer,
dropping a close game 63-59. Clark led the team with 15 points on
the night, while Matt Selling and Pulliam were behind with 14 and
13 points, respectively. Selling also led the team with six
rebounds. Ingram rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12
points. Trinity shot 37.7% from the field and a much improved 81.2%
from the free throw line.
