LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming & diving teams competed this weekend which kicked off the 2014-15 season.
Centenary College
The Gents competed in a dual meet against Trinity
University this weekend, falling 125-74to the Tigers.
Beau Montgomery’s victory came in the 100 yard
butterfly with a time of 54.28. Montgomery added a third place
finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.40 along with
a first place finish on the 200 yard medley relay team and the 400
yard freestyle team that finished second. Juan Tapia
finished third in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:08.08 while
Roberto Roig-Perez finished third in the 100 yard butterfly with a
time of 55.63. Zack Harrison also added a third place finish in the
100 yard free with a time of 49.58. Anthony McDonald and
Andrew Borel added second and third place finishes in the 100 yard
backstroke with times of 58.40 and 58.74 while Kellen Bullock and
Andre Trahan finished second and third in the 100 yard breaststroke
with times of 1:05.37 and 1:13.20. Centenary returns to
the pool on Saturday, Oct. 25 in a intrasquad at 11
a.m.
Colorado College
Seniors Chris Garrity and Matt
Nadel posted Colorado College's top finishes as
the Big Cats began the 2014-15 season at the Buff Invitational on
Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic
Center. Garrity took first place in the 100-yard
backstroke with a time of 58.13, beating his closest rival to the
wall by nearly a second. Garrity also teamed with Brian Kopec,
Yueyang Yu, and Sam Zuke for a second-place
finish in the 200 medley relay. Garrity and Nadel
began the meet by teaming with Daniel
Oldendorf and Yu for a second-place effort in the
400 medley relay. Nadel claimed second in the 500
freestyle with a time of 5:22.95, and was part of a third-place
finish in the 400 free relay along with Kopec, Oldendorf and Crane
Sarris. Sarris was impressive in the
freestyle sprints, taking third in both the 50 and 100. His time of
22.70 in the 50 free was just .12 seconds out of second and .34 off
the winning pace. In the 100, Crane's effort was only .64 out of
second. Colorado College is idle until Nov. 8 when the
Tigers host Colorado Mines at Schlessman
Natatorium.
McMurry University
The War Hawks opened the season with a dual against the
University of Texas – Permian Basin on Saturday, but fell
143-58 in the men’s events. The quartet of David
Bowers, Kameron Salinas, Vincent Crosby and Kent
Grimes won the 200 medley relay. The group
touched at 1:40.76 minutes. Sophomore Cameron
Mills was the War Hawk men's lone individual
winner, taking the 50 freestyle at a time of 23.18 seconds. Grimes
was second in the 100 backstroke (56.66) and Crosby third in the
100 butterfly (55.61). Salinas grabbed a pair of third
place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 100
breaststroke (1:05.75).
Trinity University
The Tigers opened the 2014-15 season with a win over SCAC
opponent, Centenary College this weekend. Trinity won nine of the
11 total men’s swimming events. Stephen Culberson, the NCAA
Division III national champion in the men’s 100-yard
freestyle, won Saturday’s race with a time of 48.62 seconds.
The three-time All-American finished first in the 50 freestyle
(21.85), and and swam the second leg of the winning 200 freestyle
relay (1:30.19). His teammates were Adam Thomas, Kevin Thomas, and
Nathaniel Adams. Culberson was an All-American last year in the 50
and 100 free, and an Honorable Mention All-American in the 200 free
relay. Andrew Thiesse recorded winning times in three events: 200
freestyle (1:47.10), 500 freestyle (4:54.13), and 100 backstroke
(55.35). The 100 breaststroke honors went to Nikita Chirkov
(1:03.23). Stephen Kim took first place in the 200 individual
medley (2:05.55). The Tiger team of Brandon Tunon, Gordon Allan,
Adam Thomas, and Thiesse won the 400 freestyle relay in
3:20.78. Trinity’s swimmers and divers will host
the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday, October 25, at
Hixon Natatorium.
