Colorado College and Trinity University Remain in the Rankings

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released the third week of rankings for the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 Division III poll today. Trinity University (5-1-0) held onto the No. 4 spot after two wins this weekend. Colorado College (5-1-0) moved from No. 24 to No. 22 this week after winning two matches of their own. Trinity and Colorado College each remained in the same spots in the NSCAA West Regional rankings, No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Trinity moved from No. 9 to No. 7 in the D3soccer.com poll this week.

Trinity started the week against conference-opponent Southwestern University, defeating the Pirates 7-1 on the road. Zacharias Edholm and Callum Squires led both teams with two goals apiece. Johnny Lawson scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute of the game, sparking a scoring frenzy that gave Trinity a 5-0 lead until the Pirates were able to score their only goal of the game in the 62nd minute. Trinity received the remaining two goals from Nate Dauphin and Steven Gaunt.

Trinity took on No. 11 Christopher Newport Friday, winning the game with a 5-3 advantage. Lawson added two goals and one assist in this game, while Goncalo Santana added one goal of his own and assisted on both of Lawson's scoring plays. Goncalo added his third assist of the game on a 49th minute goal from Tom Carwile. Edholm scored the remaining goal for the team.

Colorado College posted two shutouts at home this weekend, beginning conference play against Centenary College. CC defeated the Gents 4-0, earning two first half goals from Seth Newby and two more in the second half from Sam Markin. Max Grossenbacher assisted on two of the team's goals. The CC defense only allowed three total shots from the Gents in the game, none of which were on target.

To finish the weekend, Colorado College routed Concordia-Moorhead 6-0. Brandon Ogilvie posted his second career hat-trick in the game, scoring three of the team's goals within a 14 minute period. Caden MazKenzie recorded two of the teams goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 21st minute. Tim Huettel had the other goal on the day, coming at the buzzer before halftime from 55 yards out.  The CC defense impressed again, allowing only four shots from the Cobbers and only one on target.

Both teams will continue conference-play Friday, September 19. Trinity will take on Austin College first before heading to the University of Dallas. Colorado College will travel to Schreiner University Friday and will continue on the road at Texas Lutheran University Sunday.

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of September 8th – 14th

GONCALO SANTANA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore midfielder from Salvador, Brazil, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, Septemerber 8th through Sunday, Septemeber 14th. 

Santana led No. 4 Trinity to a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating Southwestern to open SCAC play, and also defeating sixth-ranked Christopher Newport.

Santana grabbed a goal and four assists to pile up six points in the two games, scoring most of those against nationally-ranked CNU. He scored a goal and an assist on the first two Tiger goals on Friday night, then assisted on both of the team's second-half goals - including the game-winner.

For the season, Santana leads Trinity with 10 points in six games played, scoring two goals and a team-best six assists.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman forward Thomas Quick of Austin College had a tremendous game for the 'Roos in their only match of the week, scoring two goals and adding an assist to help Austin College battle No. 17-ranked UT-Dallas to a 3-3 draw. Sophomore midfielder Jeremy Klespis of Centenary provided the Gents' game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Concordia (MN) in the 85th minute. Sophomore midfielder Caden Mackenzie of Colorado College set up Seth Newby's game-winning goal in Friday's 4-0 victory over Centenary College and then scored the game winner in Sunday's 6-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead. Freshman midfielder Andres Carreno-Mende of Southwestern had two goals against sixth-ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday off the bench. Junior forward Isaac Lopez of Texas Lutheran scored a goal and tallied an assist in the same game for the second time this season, assisted on game winning goal against Schriener. Dallas and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.


SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHRISTIAN WULFF OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a sophomore defender from Lutherville, Md., has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, Septemerber 8th through Sunday, Septemeber 14th. 

Wulff elped the Colorado College defense post back-to-back shutouts, its third and fourth of the season.

The Tigers, led by Wulff, lowered its team goal-against average to 0.67 and held each opponent to fewer than five total shots and one shot on goal.

Wulff set up Caden MacKenzie's game-winning goal in the 6-0 victory over Concordia-Minnesota.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman defender Roberto Gutierrez of Austin College was excellent all day against a high powered UT-Dallas team, playing the full 110 minutes of action in a draw with the No. 17-ranked Comets and helping the 'Roos earn the draw with his outstanding defense despite UTD out-shooting the 'Roos 28-9. Junior forward Jake Morrison of Centenary provided a strong back line for the Gents over the weekend assisting in keeping the Maroon and White in both matches. Junior defender John Wall of Southwestern came off the bench and helped stabilize the back line and has been the most consistent center back. Sophomore defender Nathan Drouillard of Texas Lutheran continued his strong start to 2014 by scoring the second goal of his season in a 2-0 win over Schreiner. DallasSchreiner, and Trinity did not nominate anyone for the award.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Trinity University women's soccer team (4-0-1) dropped one spot to No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division III rankings this week, despite a successful weekend on the road. The Tigers took on the University of Texas-Dallas and the University of Texas-Tyler this weekend, earning identical 2-1 wins against each opponent.

Emily Jorgens, the leading scorer for the Tigers, recorded the game winning goal against UTT, after Emily Donnan put in the equalizer in the 38th minute. Jorgens goal came in the 60th minute off of an assist by Falcone. Jorgens and Falcone are tied with a conference-leading three assists on the season.

In the overtime defeat of UTD, Kelsey Falcone scored the first goal of the match, and her third goal of the season. Meredith Licata knocked in the game winner in the 93rd minute off of an assist from Emily Jorgens.

The Tigers will begin the conference season in north Texas this weekend, taking on Austin College Friday, September 19 and the University of Dallas Sunday, September 21.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Forward Sioned Kirkpatrick and defender Tara Armstrong of Texas Lutheran University earned the nod as SCAC Women's Soccer Players of the Week for week three.

SIONED KIRKPATRICK OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a junior forward from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8th through Sunday, September 14th.

Kirkpatrick led the Bulldogs to a 1-0-1 weekend including a 2-0 conference opening win over Schreiner followed by a 4-4 draw against Huston-Tillotson.

Kirkpatrick netted two goals in the match against Huston-Tillotson, including a game tying goal in the 81st minute. The Bulldogs scored two goals in the final 10 to force the tie.

She had a season-high five shots in the match.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore midfielder Hannah Jo Wright of Centenary provided a game winning penalty kick in overtime to lead the Ladies to a 2-1 win over Hendrix, the first goal of her career. Senior forward Kelsey Falcone of Trinity assisted on the eventual game-winner on Friday night against UT-Tyler, then scored the lone goal of the first half at UT-Dallas on Sunday afternoon. Austin College, Dallas, Schreiner, and Southwestern did not nominate anyone.

TARA ARMSTRONG OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a sophomore defender from Lincoln, Calif., has been selected the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8th through Sunday, September 14th.

Armstrong enjoyed a career weekend against Schreiner and Huston-Tillotson.

Armstrong led the Bulldog defense to a shutout over the Moutaineers and their first conference win of the season, holding Schreiner to no shots on the afternoon.

Armstrong tallied her first career assist in a 2-0 win over Schreiner, setting up a game-winning goal and follow that up by scoring the first goal of her TLU career in a 4-4 draw with Huston-Tillotson.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman defender Riley Spudic of Centenary held Hendrix's leading scorer Samantha Lallas without a goal in the 2-1 overtime win over the Warriors - marking the first of the season for the Maroon and White. Junior goalkeeper Katherine Rodgers of Southwestern had an strong week in goal despite the seven goals allowed, making numerous diving saves to keep the Pirates in the contestSenior goalkeeper Lauren Goldberg of Trinity allowed one goal in more than 130 minutes in net for the Tigers, recording a pair of saves, and earning the victory in both games. Austin CollegeDallas, and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity University outside hitter Layne Hubbard and Texas Lutheran University libero Megan Lee have been named SCAC Volleyball Players-of-the-Week for week three of the season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LAYNE HUBBARD OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior outside hitter from Austin, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8th through Sunday, September 14th.

Hubbard led the Tigers to a 4-0 record at this weekend's Trinity Fall Classic, holding a 12-2 set record, and finishing as the only undefeated team.

Hubbard was named the Tournament MVP for her performance, which included leading the team in both kills and service aces over the four matches. She hit an impressive .435 with a team-high 10 kills in a 3-0 win over #18 Claremont on Friday night. Against both George Fox and Puget Sound, Hubbard posted double-doubles to lead the team to wins. She also grabbed 11 aces in the four matches, highlighted by five aces to start the weekend against George Fox.

For the season, Hubbard is third on the team with 93 total kills (2.33/set) and a .218 hitting percentage. She leads the team with 24 total aces (0.60/set), and also has 112 total digs (2.80/set) and 16 blocks (0.40/set) for the year.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore middle blocker Presleigh Watson of Austin College continued her outstanding start to the season, leading the 'Roos in kills, hitting percentage, and blocks as the 'Roos went 3-1 during the weekend. Watson totaled 12 blocks, and also had 32 kills against only five attack errors. Freshman outside hitter Desiree Frey of Centenary gathered 15 kills in the Ladies' seven matches including a team-best 13 kills against LeTourneau, averaging 2.14 kills for the weekend and 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Abbe Holtze of Colorado College led the team in kills in four out of five matches, while averaging 13.6 kills a match ... Was second on the team in digs and blocks and was third on the team in assists and earned a career-high 27 digs and five assists against La Verne to go along with her 16 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Kirby Kincannon of Southwestern led the Pirates to three wins with a .391 attack percentage, adding in two ace, 14 digs and 11 blocks (also a team high)Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Fording of Texas Lutheran tallied double-digit kills in all four matches as she led TLU to a 3-1 record. Had a career-high 19 kills against George FoxDallas did not nominate anyone. Schreiner was idle this past weekend.

 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MEGAN LEE OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a senior libero from University City, Texas has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 8th through Sunday, September 14th.

Lee led the Bulldogs defensively to a 3-1 weekend in San Antonio at the Trinity Invite including a pair of five set wins over Linfield and Puget Sound.

Lee tallied her second and third 30-plus dig performances of the season and also tied a season high with three kills against Linfield. She averaged 6.06 digs/set and also picked up 11 assists.

This is the second time this season that Lee has been named SCAC Defensive Player of the Week, earning the honor in the first weekend of play. Lee currently leads the SCAC in digs per set with 6.11, which is 1.04 more digs/set than the person in second.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior defensive specialist Rachel Fusselman of Austin College had another strong weekend to help the 'Roos go 3-1, averaging 4.5 digs and totaling 63 digs for the weekend, and also recording four service aces. Freshman defensive specialist Haley Cubberly of Centenary led the team with 30 digs in the Ladies' seven matches this weekend including 22 against LeTourneau while averaging 4.29 digs per set. Sophomore middle hitter Keli Sherwood of Colorado College led the team with 1.35 blocks per set and was third on the team in kills this past weekend, leading the Tigers to a 3-2 weekend. Junior middle blocker Olivia Drummond of Southwestern was named to the All-Tournament team in San Antonio, posting five blocks and 25 kills with two digs on the weekend. Junior defensive specialist Shannon Courtney of Trinity led the Tigers in digs for the weekend, averaging 3.79 digs/set and picking up a weekend-best 18 digs in the final match of the tournament, leading Trinity to its third straight sweep. Dallas did not nominate anyone. Schreiner was idle this past weekend.
