Schreiner Wins Second Consecutive SCAC Men's Golf Championship

BLANCO, Texas -- The Schreiner University men's team pulled away in the final round of the 2015 SCAC Golf Championships to claim it's second straight SCAC title and third straight overall conference title with a three-round score of 879 (+15). Official Championship Website | Results | Photo Gallery | Awards Photo Gallery | Day Two Video Recap

As is the team's calling card, the sixth-ranked Mountaineers were consistent throughout the day, posting a low score at 72 and a high score of 75 among its five participants. The five-some led the way in Par 4 scoring at +29, Par 5 scoring at -16, and birdies at 50. In adition, four Mountaineers secured all-conference honors with top 10 finishes while three placed in the top five. With the victory, the team becomes the first to win back-to-back SCAC men's golf titles since Oglethorpe University did it in 2011 and 2012.

Senior Jimmy Keener led the way with a three-round score of 218 and a 74 (+2) in the final round. Sophomore Matt McClung shot a 219 with a 72 in the final round while Cheyne Kendall had the lowest score among the team at 72 and a 219 overall while leading the field in birdies with 13. Zach Oliver also finished in the top ten with a score of 223.

Trinity University finished second with a score of 890 (+26). The 19th-ranked Tigers were led by sophomore Redmond Lyons who earned a top three finish with a three-round total of 218, and was second in the field in pars with 36. Senior Kalen Vos finished seventh with a total score of 221 while sophomore Diego Trevino shot a 72 to post a three-round score of 225.

Southwestern University came in third, just two strokes behind Trinity at 892 (+28). Sophomore Connor Murphy fell just one shot short of the individual title, finishing second with a three-round total of 215. Senior Jordan Cowart earned a ninth place finish for the 11th-ranked Pirates with a score of 224.

In addition, Southwestern's Sutherland Stith earned SCAC Men's Golf Freshman-of-the-Year honors for his performance throughout the year and the weekend. The first-year golfer shot a three-round total of 229, and led the field in the pars with 37. 

Rounding out the field was Texas Lutheran University in fourth at 908 (+44), Centenary College in fifth at 945 (+37), and the University of Dallas in sixth at 1056 (+192).

TLU senior Adam Peterson won his fourth straight individual title in the spring and his first SCAC individual title, shooting a 69 (-3) in the final round to come-from-behind and take the win. Peterson posted five birdies on the round including three in his last four holes. For his efforts, he secured SCAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Year honors. 

Senior Jamie Gibson of Centenary and freshman Chris Eckes of Dallas each earned all-conference honors with 11th place finishes and scores of 225.

Schreiner led the way with four individuals on the All-SCAC team while Trinity had three honorees. 

Several SCAC schools and individuals now await a possible bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, to be held May 12-15 in Greensboro, N.C.
