Women's Track & Field Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season last week.

Colorado College competed in the 2015 Mid Masters Track & Field Championships at the Air Force Academy, while the University of Dallas, Texas Lutheran University and Trinity University all competed at the Trinity Open.

Colorado College
The Tigers traveled down the road to the Air Force Academy last week, competing in the Mid America Masters Track & Field Championships Sunday. Five members of the squad competed in the “women’s open” portion of the meet, sponsored by USA Track & Field. Freshman Ayla Loper posted three victories, including ins in the 400-meter race (1:06.61), high jump (4’9”) and she acted as the anchor on the winning 4x268 meter relay, joining Katie Sandfort, Samantha Gilbert and McKenna Schnack. Sandfort also posted an individual top finish in the 3,000 meter event with a time of 11:54.80, nearly one minute faster than teammate Allie Crimmins, who placed second. Gilbert finished third in the 60-meters (8.4 seconds) and Schnack was fourth in the 200-meters (28.18).

University of Dallas
The Crusaders competed at the Trinity Open over the weekend, earning one top finish in the meet and an array of top-10 finishes. Senior Colleen Slattery won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 13:16, earning her first event win and the team’s first top finisher of the season. A trio of runners finished in the top five on the 5000 meter race, including Clare Myers (19:33), Ruth Fritz (20:13) and Angela Moore (20:39). In the 1500-meter event, Fritz and Myers claimed eighth and ninth overall, respectively. Rounding out the top-10 finishers for the Crusaders were Katie McIntyre with seventh in the 200 meter, Lizzy Depew finishing eighth in the 100 meter hurdles and Katie Spellmeyer with seventh in the javelin throw (20.34 meters).

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs traveled to San Antonio this weekend to compete at the Trinity Open, with four athletes earning individual event wins. Haley Lasseter won the javelin throw, Brielle Brown won the discus throw, Haley Cortez won the 400-meter hurdles and Nativita Kamisnki took the 100-meter hurdles. Sarah Randall finished second in the 800-meter run, while K’Alicia Henderson joined Kaminski with a good 100-meter hurdles performance, finishing third. Ranecia Faison also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles, while Henderson finished third. The team of Brittany Steubing, Morgan Lacy Randall and Henderson finished third in the 4x100 relay. Randall, Cortez, Malyssa Barrow and Henderson finished third in the 4x100 relay. Cori Picazo took second place in the pole vault, while Marlena Hunt placed second in the triple jump. Meredith Berger placed second in the shot put and Lasseter took third in the same event. Lasseter also finished second in the discus throw, behind Brown.

Trinity University
The Tigers began the 2015 outdoor season at home this weekend, hosting the Trinity Open. The women’s team turned in five event wins, while several other team members turned in solid times and marks. Britney Sullivan scored a win in the triple jump with a leap of 11.40 meters, just shy of a school record. Erika Hochstein took third in the triple jump, while Sullivan also finished third in the long jump. Heather Hayes won the high jump (1.50 meters), while Sarah Pickett was just behind her in third place. Taylor Gloor won pole vault, reaching 2.75 meters. With a time of 25.75 seconds, Nkolika Nweke won the 200 meter dash, followed closely by teammates Bailey Drury and Elizabeth Peters. Nweke was second in the 100 meter dash and Peters came in at fourth. Mariana Sigala nabbed the title in the 800 meter run, while Natalie Belew led the Tigers in fifth place in the 1,500 meter run. The women’s 4x100 meter relay came in second, clocking in at 49.05 seconds.
