Men's Soccer Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The second half of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer season kicked off as teams who had played each other the previous weekend flipped sites and prepared for a rematch.

The highlighted match of the weekend was the rematch of SCAC Tigers with the No. 3 Trinity University Tigers travelling to face the No. 14 Colorado College Tigers. A week after earning a 1-0 decision on their home turf, the Texas Tigers duplicated that result at the foot of Pike's Peak and headed back home from Colorado with a 1-0 victory against the CC Tigers.

Trinity 8, Centenary 2
The third-ranked Trinity men's soccer team opened up a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference road weekend with an 8-2 win over Centenary College on Friday evening.

After scoring the first two goals of the game, Centenary got on the board with the first goal against Trinity in the last five games. The Tigers answered with another goal minutes later, but the Gents added a goal late in the half to make it a 3-2 game at the half.

Trinity exploded for five more goals to seal the win in the second half, and also held Centenary to just three shots in the final 45 minutes.

Tom Carwile led seven different Tiger players who scored goals, netting two first-half scores - including the game-winner. Victor Araujo piled up three assists, while Roberto Camargo added two helpers. Murray Fraser and Steven Gaunt each had one goal and one assist.

Colorado College 2, Southwestern 0
Brandon Ogilvie made sure the celebration of head coach Horst Richardson's 50th season with the
Colorado College men's soccer team was an enjoyable one.

Ogilvie struck for the only goal the 14-ranked Tigers needed in the 15th minute and set up an insurance tally late in the second half to lift CC to a 2-0 victory over Southwestern University on Friday afternoon in front of an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd at Washburn Field.

It proved to be Ogivie's fourth game winner of the season and the 13th of his career.

Ogilvie became the 15th Tiger to record 30 or more career goals, tying Jim Grice (1982-85) for 14th place on the program's all-time list. The senior forward also became CC's 20th player to record 70 or more career points and is tied with Eddie Dietz (1976-79) and Tyler Free (1997-00) for 18th place.

Freshman goalkeeper Theo Hooker stopped all three shots that he faced en route to his sixth clean sheet of the season. He improved to 8-1-0 and lowered his goals-against average to 0.22.

Dallas 1, Schreiner 0
The University of Dallas men's soccer team won its third-straight match in a 1-0 result at Schreiner University on Friday. Dallas garnered its sixth shutout in the triumph, and moves to 5-2 in contests decided by a goal.

Junior forward Colton Allen increased his team-leading scoring total to six with the game-winner over the Mountaineers. It was the third netter for Allen to tally as a difference maker in the match that also had him amongst team-highs in shots and shots on goal with three and two, respectively.

P.J. Hasson and Tinio Gamueda split time in the net contributing 90 minutes of shutout soccer. The keeper duo combined for five saves.

The Crusaders were ahead 1-0 by the 10:46 minute mark, and that score would remain the same through intermission and hold the remainder of the contest.

Texas Lutheran 1, Austin College 0 - OT
The high tension of overtime soccer may not be new to Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer, having now played in six overtime affairs this year, but scoring that game-winning goal to end it never stops being exciting.

On Friday, it was Isaac Lopez who sent the Bulldogs home happy after his overtime goal in the 93rd minute propelled TLU to a 1-0 home win over Austin College.

Lopez's goal came off the work of Colin Nunley and Andrew Leibl, who got the play started with a long pass that opened up Nunley down the sideline. Nunley crossed the ball into the box toward the near post where he found a running Lopez for the game winner.

It was the second time in a week the Bulldogs had defeated Austin College in overtime. Last Friday, they again scored the game's only goal in the first overtime period to win it.

The Bulldogs had plenty of chances to get on the scoreboard before Lopez's overtime theatrics. They outshot the 'Roos 23-8 for the game and recorded 12 shots on goal compared to just one for Austin College.

Texas Lutheran goalkeeper Jonathan Michael recorded his sixth shutout of the year on Friday. The junior only needed to make one save on the day.

Trinity 1, Colorado College 0
The third-ranked Trinity University men's soccer team beat No. 14 Colorado College 1-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference showdown on Sunday afternoon.

Trinity first-year player Brent Mandelkorn scored the game's only goal just 1:45 into the game, on an assist from senior Victor Araujo. Mandelkorn produced his fifth goal of the season - third game-winner - while Araujo chalked up his seventh assist of the campaign.

Trinity (13-1-0, 9-0-0 SCAC) won for the 10th consecutive game, which also included a 1-0 win over Colorado College just a week ago on Sunday, October 5, in San Antonio. The Tigers have now posted seven shutouts this season. In the SCAC standings, defending champion Trinity holds a two-game lead for first place over Colorado College (11-3-0, 7-2-0).

Senior Matt Cardone was the goalkeeper for the entire game, and amassed a season-high 10 saves. Cardone now has 45 saves to his credit this season.

Southwestern 2, Centenary 2 - 2OT
After 110 minutes of action, Southwestern and Centenary had to settle for a 2-2 tie in SCAC action on Sunday.

With no scoring to speak of the in first half, the Pirates and Gents opened the second half on a furious pace. Less than six minutes into the half, Centenary gained control with an unassisted goal from Ivann Amaya. Southwestern's red-hot offensive duo of Andres Carreno-Mendez and Christian Lopez had the answer in the 66th minute.

Centenary went up 2-1 in the 76th minute as Amaya scored his second unassisted goal of the game. With less than seven minutes remaining, Carreño-Mendez assisted as Nick Petterson scored his first goal of the season to tie the count 2-2.

Neither team was able to get on the board in either overtime as the game closed as a 2-2 tie.

Southwestern dominated the shot count 26-10 and had the only shots of the overtime frames, posting six shots in overtime. Centenary's keeper Rylan Whan was outstanding in goal with 12 saves while SU's counterpart, Travis Carmichael, was barely tested, recording one save.

The Pirates move to 5-7-1 on the year and 5-3-1 in the SCAC while Centenary moves to 4-5-3 overall and 1-5-3 in conference action. SU remains in sole possession of third place in the conference with five games remaining.

Schreiner 4, Austin College 3 - OT
It took 40 minutes for the scoring to start and visiting Austin College had a 2-1 halftime lead, but Schreiner men's soccer came back to score a 4-3 win in overtime on junior Ryan Hernandez second goal of the match. The goal came in the seventh minute of the first overtime period.

The 'Roos scored the first goal in the 41st minute by Gideon Ibemere. The Mountaineers' tied the match barely a minute later on a goal by freshman Gregg Gutierrez (with an assist by Nathaniel Olmos) but Austin College scored again three minutes later on an Evan Wyatt penalty kick to take the lead into the break.

Barely three minutes into the second half, Hernandez scored his first goal of the day off a feed by senior Justin Edwards. Austin College again took a lead when Chris Abad-Jacobi scored but Edwards scored his third goal in three matches in the 75th minute to tie it back up and force the extra period.

Hernandez ended the scoring and the match in the 97th minute.

Schreiner sophomore keeper Black Lawson gave up a pair of goals with one save. Junior Michel Clifford took over at halftime and recorded two saves while giving up Austin College's third goal. Andrew Celio went the distance in net for the 'Roos, securing five saves while giving up all four goals scored by the Mountaineers.

Schreiner had a decisive 14-5 edge in shots but Austin College was very efficient by scoring three goals in five SOG.

Dallas 1, Texas Lutheran 0
The University of Dallas men's soccer team (8-5, 4-4 SCAC) won its fourth match in a row, defeating Texas Lutheran University (5-6-2, 3-5-1 SCAC) for the second consecutive week.

Dallas prevailed 1-0 off a late goal at the 78:15 minute mark by senior midfielder Matthew Wise. It was the first netter of the campaign for Wise and increases his point total to six, tying him second on the squad with Ben Mannings.

Freshman midfielder Joseph Quiray, playing in just his fourth contest of the year, notched his first assist matching his point total in his collegiate season debut.

Texas Lutheran held an 18-12 shot advantage, but the Crusaders did capitalize in the second half, as Wise matched a team-high, three shot attempts, and pushed across the game-winner.

Sophomore goalkeeper duo P.J. Hasson and Tino Gamueda each saw 45 minutes of action, as Hasson earned the start in this match.

The two keepers have worked at compiling seven shutouts on the season. That total ties with Colorado College and Trinity University in the league.

Hasson deflected six saves, while Gamueda was credited with two, but faced 12 shots in the second frame by the Bulldogs.

TLU's Jonathan Michael had six saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

With the victories over a pair of important foes on the road, Dallas moves into fourth place behind Southwestern University and two points clear of Texas Lutheran. The Crusaders also improve to 4-2 away from the home confines.
