Alana Jones, Centenary College, Women's Basketball - Character & Community

ALANA JONES OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a sophomore guard on the women's basketball team from Shreveport, La., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 6.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Centenary's Jones does great work on the court but also does it just as well off the court, but with less fanfare.

Alana, one of the conference’s top all-around players, admitted she was shocked when she found out that she was chosen for this award and that she was very aware of it having read countless features in the last two years.

She is averaging 8.5 points along with 8.1 rebounds per game this season, currently ranking second in the conference in the latter category. Alana is in the midst of another superb season as she has reached double figures seven times, grabbed 10 or more rebounds in a game eight times, and has five double-doubles.

But she finds time for other things that are important to her and that impact the Shreveport-Bossier community and surrounding areas.

“The community service work that I have done in my time involves a food pantry at St. Luke Baptist Church," said Jones. "I have also helped at multiple Centenary Basketball Camps in the summer, organized a Domestic Violence awareness outreach as well as a Kobe Bryant tribute to women’s sports in January of 2021."

“The game of basketball has taught me so many life lessons it’s almost unreal," continued Jones. "My decision at a young age to make things like balance and overall responsibility have made my transition from a high school scholar-athlete to college student-athlete almost seamless. And immediate critical thinking has been a beneficial skill that I have reaped great rewards from as well.”

“I read the write-ups about other student-athletes every time a new one is featured for this award, and never in my wildest imagination would I ever have thought that I would be considered for such an honor,” said Jones.

“I’m just living my life, helping out when possible, and being considered for such an honor means more to me than I can express, and being chosen is literally unbelievable."
