Southwestern University Headlines Five Programs Earning SCAC Team Sportsmanship Awards

SUWANEE, Ga. - Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference fall sports programs were recognized by the league as recipients of the SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship award in balloting conducted following each sport's respective season.

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The fall awards are presented in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.

Four of the five programs receiving recognition this fall are first-time Team Sportsmanship honorees, with just the University of Dallas women’s soccer program earning the distinction for the second-straight year.

In cross country, Southwestern University swept the team sportsmanship honors on both the men's and women's side. The Pirate men were the top choice with the University of Dallas and the University of St. Thomas (last year’s honoree) finishing second and third, respectively. For the women, SU earned top honors followed by the University of Dallas (last year’s honoree) in second place and Trinity University third in the balloting. Southwestern’s sweep of the cross country Team Sportsmanship awards marks the fifth time in the last seven years one program has received both men’s and women’s recognition.

In men’s soccer, Trinity University took top sportsmanship honors, followed closely by Austin College and Schreiner University, who finished tied for second. The Tiger men’s soccer team is just the second Trinity fall program to earn SCAC SAAC Team Sportsmanship honors, joining the volleyball squad that earned the accolades during the 2020-21 season.

In women’s soccer, the University of Dallas earned its second-straight SAAC team sportsmanship award, followed by Texas Lutheran University in second and Centenary College in third. UD is the third program in SCAC history to earn the women’s soccer honor in consecutive seasons, joining Austin College (2017, 2018) and Southwestern University (2019, 2020-21).

And in the sport of volleyball, Texas Lutheran University received top honors with Dallas, last year’s honoree, and Colorado College finishing tied for second.
