LEXINGTON, Ky. – Head Coach Julie Jenkins of No. 6 Trinity University Volleyball was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Coach of the Year Wednesday prior to the Tigers' NCAA III quarterfinal matchup with Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh.
Coach Jenkins led Trinity to its eighth appearance in the NCAA III Volleyball Championship quarterfinals this season on a 28-4 record and the 15th undefeated regular season in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference since 1991.
The longtime leader of the Tigers eclipsed 1,000 victories at Trinity this season in a road sweep at Centenary College (LA), the same venue that hosted Coach Jenkins's 1,000th overall victory as a head coach in her career last year.
Thirty-three different Tiger players have earned All-America honors under Jenkins's leadership, for a total of 54 selections since 1991, including the repeat recognition for both Sara Flynn and Emily Ellis and the honorable mention of Maddie Fate on Tuesday.
Between the first national recognition for Coach Jenkins in 1999 and her second this week, Trinity has won 670 matches, appeared in 20 NCAA III tournaments with six trips at least to the round of eight, won 14 SCAC championships and been ranked nationally by the AVCA in 216 of 272 weekly polls, with 80 appearances in the national top-five.
