GARLAND, Texas – Trinity University won its fourth straight SCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship and the program's 15th overall title on Saturday night at the Garland ISD Natatorium. The league crown was Trinity's 11th in the past 12 years. The Tigers finished with 979 points to defeat second-place Colorado College, who ended with 937 points. Southwestern University was third with 766.50 points, followed by McMurry University with 319.50 points, University of the Ozarks with 288 points, Austin College with 164 points, and Centenary College with 73 points.
Swimmer-of-the-Meet honors went to Trinity's Michael Kohl who won titles in the 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, 200 free relay, 50 free, 100 fly, 400 medley relay, 100 free, and 400 free relay. Kohl won the Swimmer-of-the-Meet honor for the third consecutive year.
For the second consecutive year, Diver-of-the-Meet honors went to Konstantine Partalas who won SCAC titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
The Colorado College staff - led by 17th-year head coach Anne Goodman James, along with assistant coach Jen Buffin, assistant coach Adric Arndt, and diving coach Ellen Walker - earned SCAC Men's Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honors. It marks the third Men's Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honor for Goodman James and marks the program's third overall all-time award.
By winning the 3-meter board today, Trinity's Konstantine Partalas became just the second men's diver in SCAC history to sweep both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards in consecutive championships and the first since DePauw's Nate Moch accomplished the feat in 2002 and 2003. Partalas tallied a score of 513.15. Aidan Richter of Colorado College was second with a score of 432.60. Teammate Mac O'Brien was third with a mark of 386.70. In fourth was Southwestern's Griffin Salinas with a score of 360.10. Colorado College's Edmund Davis set a new SCAC championship 1650 free record when he touched the wall in 15:54.11. The time was also good for an NCAA B cut time as well. Matt Lanzara of Trinity took home top honors in the 200-yard back as he touched the wall first with a time of 1:50.26. Caleb Peimann of Colorado College was second with a tally of 1:52.49. Trinity's Michael Kohl won the 100-yard free with a B cut time of 44.89. With the win he became just the third swimmer in league history to win the 100 free three straight years. The win also was his ninth career SCAC title which ties him for fourth-most in SCAC history. Kendal Southwell of Trinity became the third swimmer in league history to win the 200-yard breast three consecutive times after he touched the wall first in 2:01.25. The time set a new SCAC open and championship record while also being good for a B cut time. Finishing in second was Collin Ralston of Colorado College who recorded a time of 2:01.78. Zach Kangieser of Southwestern defended his title in the 200-yard fly after he touched the wall first with a time of 1:51.90. Trinity's Will Walker was second after he swam a time of 1:54.92. Coming in third was Trinity's Oma Shahatit with a time of 1:56.21. 200-Yard Butterfly Interview
Trinity closed out the night and the championship with a record-breaking performance in the 400 free relay. The team of Kohl, Manifold, Lanzara, and Nathaniel Early established a new SCAC standard with a time of 3:00.56, which earned the group a 'B' cut time. Colorado College's team of Step Flanagan, Dax Sherwood, Topher Shepherd, and Hussin took home second place after swimming a 3:03.49. Notes: A total of six SCAC records were broken including, 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, 1650 free, and the 400 free relay. In addition to the six league records, SCAC men's swimmers tallied 13 NCAA 'B' cut times.
