Trinity Axes Puget Sound, 3-0, to Open NCAA III Regional at Claremont

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- No. 6 Trinity University Volleyball cruised past University of Puget Sound in the first round of the 2022 NCAA III Women's Volleyball Championship, 3-0, on the campus of this weekend's regional host, No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

The Tigers (26-4) posted a .343 hitting percentage on the afternoon, the seventh match of the season over the .300 mark, and fourth-highest through 30 matches in the 2022 campaign.

Four Trinity hitters collected eight or more kills in the first-round sweep led by nine each from outside hitters first-year Reagan Whatley and junior Mackenzie Logan. Whatley led the overall point total at 13.5 points thanks to a trio of service aces and had a hand in three blocks, all while swinging for a .409 hitting clip.

AVCA All-Region recipients Sara Flynn and Emily Ellis joined the two outsides in the eight-or-more list, each with eight successful attacks on a combined .452 attack rate. The duo each collected four-plus blocks on the afternoon as well, with Ellis one-upping Flynn at five.

Senior setter Marisa Amarino guided the Tigers to their fourth-best match by hitting percentage as she was credited with 19 assists out of Trinity's 41 kills. Sophomore Trinity Herrera completed the six-rotation lineup for the Tigers with 15 assists of her own.



First-year libero Jenna Rodriguez paced the backrow effort with 14 digs, her 17th double-digit performance on the season. Whatley was the only other Tiger over five digs with eight.

No. 6 Trinity Volleyball will battle University of Chicago Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT (6:30 p.m. CT). The regional finale is slated for 5 p.m. PT (7 p.m. CT) Saturday.
