SUWANEE, Ga. -- In exclusive voting by the head coaches in the league, Ruth Hill of Trinity University has been selected the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year. Complete Release
In the same balloting, Trinity Levy of Trinity University was tabbed as the league’s Newcomer-of-the-Year and her coach, Andrew Cohn, was selected as SCAC Coach-of-the-Year.
Trinity’s top line player throughout the fall and spring, Hill, a sophomore from Abilene, Texas, finished the regular season with a 16-7 overall record in singles action, which included a 10-5 dual-match record this spring. Hill, the fifth-ranked player in the West Region who earned all-Tournament honors at the SCAC Championship for both her singles and doubles play for the second consecutive year, was selected to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships – both as a singles competitor and for doubles action along with partner Olivia Kim. It is the first time since Mackenzie Knoop in 2012 that a Tiger player will compete in both the singles and doubles competition at the NCAA Championships. Hill and Kim picked up the only point for the Tigers in last weekend’s 5-1 loss to No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer in the second round of the NCAA Championships, defeated the No. 2 doubles team in the West Region in the process.
Hill follows a long string of Trinity players to earn SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors and her selection marks a record 14th time a Trinity student-athlete has earned the league’s top honor.
Levy, a first-year from Carmarillo, Calif., made an immediate impact this season for Trinity, posting an 18-6 mark while playing No. 3 singles for the 16th-ranked Tigers. Currently ranked No. 22 in the West Region, she picked up victories in matches against opponents on several ranked teams, including #16 Southwestern, #19 Washington (Mo.), #21 Mary Washington, #22 Washington & Lee and #24 Colby. Teaming with Cate Cushing, the duo earned All-America status after picking up the ITA Southwest Regional Doubles Championship back in the fall and, after posting a 15-5 doubles mark during the spring, is currently the eighth-ranked duo in the West Region.
Levy, who earned First Team honors as both a singles player and doubles player this year as well as All-Tournament accolades at the SCAC Championships for both her singles and doubles play, is the fourth Trinity women’s player to earn SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors, joining Hailey Feuer (2019) and teammates Cushing and Olivia Kim, who earned the honor in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
In his third season as the head coach of the Tigers, Cohn led the currently 16th-ranked Trinity women’s tennis squad to the 2023 SCAC championship match where the Tigers defeated Southwestern University, 5-2. The win represented the 10th conference title in the last 11 contested championships for Trinity and 25th overall for the women's tennis program, the third-most conference crowns by one program in SCAC history, trailing only the 26 championships won by Trinity women's soccer and 27 by the Trinity men's tennis program. As the league’s automatic qualifier, the Trinity women (15-6) represented the SCAC in the NCAA Division III Championships and fell in the tournament’s second round to third-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 5-1.
A two-time ITA National Assistant Coach-of-the Year (2015 and 2017), this marks the second consecutive year that Cohn has earned SCAC Women’s Coach-of-the-Year honors.
