Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. – The No. 19/20 Trinity women's golf team opened up play at the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, which is hosted at the Mission Inn Resort & Club's El Campeon Golf Course.

Following the first 18 holes of action, the Tigers are 10th among a field of 29 different teams. Trinity shot a first-round 326 as a team and are just six shots from a spot in the top five in a crowded field. Emory University leads the tournament with a team score of 315 after round one, which is just three shots ahead of second-place George Fox University.

Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino led Trinity with a six-over 79 on the par-73 course and is tied for 15th individually. In a trend that was true throughout the team, Sanchez played much better on the back nine. She had her only birdie of the round on the back and had just two bogeys to finish +1 over the final nine holes.

Erin Flynn played the most consistent before and after the turn, but was still one shot better to close out the round. Flynn is tied for 23rd after shooting a score of 80, picking up both of her round's two birdies in the last four holes, and playing the back at +3.

Kiona Hsiu overcame a rough start to her round that saw her nine-over after just six holes, finishing with four birdies and just three bogeys over her final 12 holes to shoot a first-round 81.

Lucy Hansen had her only birdie on the back nine and played the final five holes at even-par. She finished with an 86 in the round that included a five-shot improvement (+4) on the back nine. Erin Farrow finished with a score of 93 after a tough start, but finished strong at just +5 on the back nine thanks to a pair of birdies.

Coach Speak
"It was a tough day for everyone," admitted Head Coach Shelby DeVore. "Lots of hard pin placements but the girls kept grinding. I think we will feel more comfortable out there tomorrow."

Next Steps
After starting off on the first hole at 1:00 p.m. (ET) this afternoon, Trinity will now move up to an earlier start for day two. The Tigers are scheduled to begin teeing off on hole #10 at 8:10 a.m. (ET) tomorrow and will play with University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Otterbein University for the second straight day. UW-Whitewater and Otterbein are 18th and 19th, respectively, after the first day.

The top 15 teams after three rounds will advance to the fourth round of the NCAA Championships. The top six individuals not on those 15 teams will also qualify individually to play on the final day of the tournament.
