AUSTIN, Texas – Colorado College junior James Settles was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-America® Second Team it was announced on Thursday.

Settles is the first SCAC Academic All-America® honoree in men’s track & field/cross country since Texas Lutheran’s Marquis Brown earned the accolade in 2018. He is the first member of CC's men's track & field or cross country programs to receive the national award since it began in 1952. A native of Claremont, Calif., he has a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average through his three years at CC, while majoring in computer science.

Settles produced an outstanding 2022-23 campaign in both sports, including being named the SCAC Runner of the Year after winning the 2022 individual cross country title and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship Meet, where he placed 60th.

He followed that up this past spring by finishing fourth in the 5K at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning the school's first All-America honor by a male since Julian Boggs in 2007. Settles was named the SCAC Male Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 5K and 10K at the league meet and he holds the school record in both events.

"James is very deserving of being recognized for this national award," Colorado College track and field head coach Katie Bretscher said. "He has earned the highest level of athletic achievement in our sport while maintaining a perfect grade-point average."

Settles also won the prestigious Elite 19 Award this past year by the SCAC in men's cross country and men's track & field.
